The 7-11 video got me excited and brought back memories about those years riding jr and moving up the rankings as I got older. I like to know who the French, Dutch, or other power house Western European riders who rode in the Olympics and turned pro. I know about the ones from GDR but are more interested on the ones who turn pro and did all the donky work. I have lots of respect for them. They can read a race like a book. 84, not so much other years because I saw them race here in LA. Too bad no Eastern blk countries.

Here are the US team rosters

1984: Los Angeles, Calif.
Beckman, John C.: Points Race, reserve
Carmichael, Jon C.: reserve
Carpenter-Phinney, Connie: Road Race, first @ 2:11:14.0
Emery, Brent R.: reserve
Gorski, Mark: Scratch Sprint, first
Grewal, Alexi S.: Road Race, first @ 4:59:57.0
Grylls, David M.: reserve
Hegg, Steve E.: 4,000m Individual Pursuit, first @ 4:39.35
Kiefel, Ronald A.: Road Race, ninth @ 5:01.40; 100km Team Time Trial, third
Knickman, Clarence (Roy): 100km Team Time Trial, third
McDonough, R. Patrick: reserve
Nitz, Leonard H.: 4000m Individual Pursuit, third @ 4:44.03
O'Reilly, Rory: Kilometer Time Trial, eighth @ 1:07.39
Parks, Janelle L.: Road Race, 10th @ 2:13:28
Phinney, Davis W.: Road Race, fifth @ 5:00:17; 100km Team Time Trial, third
Rogers, Thurlow: Road Race, sixth, 5:00:17
Shapiro, Douglas C.: reserve
Thompson, Kristin I.: Road Race, 21st @ 2:13:28
Twigg, Rebecca: Road Race, second @ 2:11:14
Vails, Nelson B.: Scratch Sprint, second
Van Haute, Danny: Points Race, did not qualify
Weaver, Andrew: 100km Team Time Trial, third
Whitehead, Mark S.: Points Race, did not qualify
Staff: Edward Borysewicz, coach; Timothy Kelly, road coach; Carl Leusenkamp, track coach; Edmund Burke Ph.D, technical director; Michael A. Fraysse, manager

Here's the winner. Grewal wasn't involved in Eddie Borysewicz's blood doping that year because Borysewicz didn't even want him on the team and had conspired, in vain, to have him beat out in the qualifying race. He was estranged from Borysewicz and riding on his own.

Here's another compilation video of Alexi Grewal in the Coors Classics that I posted onto the tube.

Two more of Alan McCormack, another popular rider from Ireland in the Coors Classics.

OH, I know that list, but wanted the European one. But, it is nice to see those names again. it brought back memories of hanging out at the 7-11 velodrome seeing Gorski kick Kopylov's butt in 83. Whitehead,(meat) was out local roughneck at the Encino track. He was pretty quick when young but not the fastest.

Man, I had to say, I wanted my local bud, Thurlow Rogers or Phinny to win. I never like Grewal. I was sitting in Mission Viejo watching as the two coming toward the line with 1 k to go. I was sure Bauer was going to kill him in the sprint. I was shocked and floored. I wanted Bauer to win so badly instead of him. Bauer is a great rider and has bad luck on his side often.

Yeah Bauer was good alright and once held the TDF yellow for about 10 days. But he sure managed to get beat a lot on the line back then ever since 1980 when he rode on a team with Bob Cook and Dale Stetina. That one at the '84 Olympics was an uphill grade to the line (favors Grewal) and Bauer underestimated him and led him in with 20 seconds on Lauritzen too.

Here's Grewal's side of that one:

Here's Mount's 6th place in the '76 Olympics in Montreal. I was hoping he'd win in 1980 but president Carter pulled the plug on the Moscow Olympics over Afghanistan that year.

I liked Stieda a lot too. Canada has always had some talent at this.
