I'm rebuilding my brother's Pinarello Catena Lusso for him while he is out of the country, and got around to the hubs. None of the components are original as he sold off the Shimano stuff that was on this frame when he bought it and rebuilt it with a Campy mix.

I can't tell for sure if these hubs are early Chorus or Victory?

I believe he always thought they were Chorus but upon rebuilding the front hub, I see it has 3/16" bearings and not 7/32". Grease was not Campy that was in there, and he uses Phil Wood, and it wasn't that either, so guessing he just used these as he got them.

If these were actually Chorus hubs, what would happen if someone had put 3/16" balls in them? And what happens if you use 7/32" balls in a hub designed for 3/16"? I obviously haven't tried putting 7/32" balls in this, but was wondering in case they were rebuilt by someone who didn't pay attention to the bearing size and just slapped the more common 3/16" front hub bearings in it?

Velobase can be wrong since it is user inputs. It's possible there is no difference between chorus and victory and they just carried the hubs over which is often the case. I would pull the dustcaps and try both sizes and see which fit better and give an OLD closer to 100mm.

Looking at some later catalogs (1988), even Chorus used 3/16" balls; Record was the only one that used 7/32", so I guess I'll assume the 3/16" are correct, replace and go from there. I may try some 7/32", but don't think they will work.

My guess would be Victory, as there is no grease hole on the drive side rear hub dust cover. Just a guess.

Looks like a "Victory" hub to me. The axle set and races are essentially the same as earlier Gran Sport/Tipo, with cosmetically different shell and quick release.

There is a grease hole in all 4 dust caps, but I would also bet these are Victory. From the pics on Velobase, it is really hard to tell them apart... I can't.

Put the front hub together with 3/16" bearings and the OLD is right at 100.2mm, so betting those are correct.

Easiest way to tell the difference between Victory and Chorus are the dust caps. Chorus dust caps are slightly domed, while the Victory would be flat. So yes, they are Victory..The front bearings are 3/16"rear bearings but the rear should be 1/4". Chorus is the same.
