Very cool, I actually came across a tour of the painted churches recently while looking for a gravel bike packing trip (hotels, i'm too old for camping).

Looks like an amazing trip - enjoy!

The Campion Trail from Trinity View Park north for about 1 mile is complete including a bridge over a small creek. Unfortunately, no further work is being performed to extend it north the 3 to 4 miles to the North Campion trail.

Latest (February 2024) update on FW2D "Discovery Trail" construction:

According to this it's going to be years yet (~2028) before one can ride 100% trails FW2D, but mmaayybbee in another year or so it will be mostly complete.

What route is the best current path FW2D as far as staying on bike paths and avoiding cars?

From mile 0 to mile 7, you can't ride anymore. The powers that be decided bicycles were incompatible with the recreational opportunity they were trying to provide at Benbrook Lake.
From mile 7 to mile 39 (with one short section on a residential street) you're off-street on FtW's Trinity Trail.
From mile 39 to mile 46 you're on residential streets.
Mile 46 to 46.5 is a thoroughfare.
From mile 46.5 to 53.7 you're on Arlington's trail network.
From mile 53.7 to 61.4 you're on residential streets, some with bike lanes. I've always walked my bike the block between Winding Hollow Lane and Meandering Way up (and I do mean up) Brown Blvd. because of limited sight lines.
From mile 61.4 to 63.6 you're on Grand Prairie paths.
From mile 63.6 to 66.1 you're on Grand Prairie streets.
From mile 66.1 to 81.5 you're on Grand Prairie and Dallas paths.
From mile 81.5 to 82.4 you're on a bike lane on Dallas' Sylvan Ave.
From mile 82.4 to 99.3 you're on Dallas' paths.
From mile 99.3 to 106.5 you're on Richardson residential streets, most with marked bike lanes.
From mile 106.5 to 108.3 you're on Richardson bike paths.
From mile 108.3 to 109.2 you used to be on Plano's paths, but Silver Line construction has wiped that path out for some indeterminate time so now you have to ride through a parking lot and up J Place.

Anyway, best? I dunno. In the old days , we rode the shoulder of 183; this is better than that.


For a short period, you could ride FtW's Trinity Trails to the low water crossing near Hadley-Ederville, ride up low traffic streets to the North Richland Hill TRE station, six days a week take the TRE three stops east to West Irving, pick up the Rock Island Trail, do a short stretch of residential streets to Centennial Park and be on paths from there to Richardson. It was bike-train-bike and you missed Arlington's beautiful River Legacy path, but it was FtW2D almost street-free. Yeah, well anyway they closed the North Richland Hills TRE station and moved it to a nigh inaccessible-by-bicycle location.

Thanks for this detailed path that shows some of the best biking trails and paths for FW to Dallas areas.

I created this route that is from the North Dallas area where the North Haven path starts at the new overpass bridge over the 75 and goes to the River Trails Park FW. Both endpoints are good for exploring many more trails in both these DFW areas.

Let me know if you have improvements for this route AFA safer cycling?

It is nice that at only 46 miles, it could be a 3..4 hour for many intermediate cyclists.

The TRE and/or Dart trains could then be taken back to the starting point areas so the day would not have to be a century type ride and could be some fun exploring or food/drinks before return.
