Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This looks way out in the boonies for me, when I first saw this I was thinking of doing a bike tour there for the event but it looks out of the way for someone who has no car and lives in flagstaff.

I don't understand why you would do a bike event in Safford and not climb Mt. Graham. Plus, yeah, AZ can stuff it, my tourism dollars are going elsewhere.

Dont boycott Arizona.....boycott the governor for signing this law....or if you wanna go bigger, boycott the president for not taking the right measures to secure our border. (yes, there is a little bit of sarcasm here)

This is coming from a Mexican American that is Against the sb1070......I own a Marketing Agency, and it's hurt a lot of businesses whom i do marketing for, because these "white" businesses, catered to the majority of the population here, the "browns", and well now.....they are feeling the pinch of something they really didnt vote on.

this is a race....and even though i doubt it they'd get hurt by the law, i would hate it that it get boycotted.....

For those who plan to attend, I hope to see you all there having fun, riding next to a brown man.....dont worry i am an American, you will not be prosecuted for that....LOL!

My intention was humor, not a move to P&R.

Hmm, may check out the metric or full century. Will have to see how my fitness is closer to the time, and see which makes more sense.

Any of you doing Tour de Tucson in November? The most I've ever ridden is 80 miles and I signed up for the 110 miler in November. I know I can do it, but my riding has lagged a bit this past month due to the heat.

I haven't signed up yet, but planning on doing that ride. I've mapped out a training plan to make sure I'm prepared for that event, I'm definitely looking forward to it. Should be nice weather then too!

Did you map out your training plan by yourself or use any sort of resource to help you? I have been riding for a few months but feel like it's time I start organizing an actual training plan rather than just riding what I feel like doing

I havent signed up yet, but the plan is to do it, I have been waking up early to try and get a ride in....the earlier the cooler it is. On a daily basis i try and do San Juan trail @ South mountain, once or twice.

On Sat and Sunday, i try and go around south mountain down baseline thru the reservation and then back up 51st ave. Its about 50 miles.....but it's intense.

Also the ride from Tempe Town lake to Saguaro Lake is really good. That's about 60 miles....the early rides are great. just make sure you follow all the traffic signs. Sheriff is out to give tickets to cyclists.....and im serious.

I am signed up for both the Tour de Safford and the Tour de Tucson. The Tucson event has two washes to cross where you need to carry the bike. Plug the holes in the toe of you shoes to keep the sand out. It's a blast and pretty will supported except bring your own nourishment.
This is Safford's first Tour, so I have no idea what to expect, except that the route looks great from the video.

I have seen some footage of people just riding through the wash instead of walking it?

T is true enough if you are one of the first ones to the wash. That has never happened for me. ( i'm slow) The area where we cross the washes are graded and watered so when the first few bikes get there it's possible to ride through. but after enough bikes go through it gets tougher and tougher. By the time I get there, no chance.
