Wheel build for touring Ogre. Rim that can be both disc or V?
Hi, Im wanting to have wheels built for my Ogre. Will definately be some off road touring. I want to fit 2013 SLX disc brakes, however, as a back-up, I want the ability to use a V brake. I may be someplace where disc parts are not easily found. IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Can I use a disc brake on the DT Swiss TK540 rim version or the Velocity Chukker msw version?
Can I use a disc brake on most quality V version rims?

If you buy a wheel with a Brake track on the rim ,
but use the disc brake, on the hub instead,
the fashion-police won't cite you, for the violation.
likewise if you have a disc hub , but don't mount a disc on it .
no penalty box time ..
elsewhere shown was a cog with 6 bolt holes, for the ' belt and braces ' backup,
you get a fixie by mounting it instead of the disc .. and flipping over the wheel..

The disc brake is all about the hub, and the rim you use will have no bearing on the decision. So just pick a v-brake compatible rim and a disc-brake compatible hub and you will be good to go.
I use v-brakes, but both my hubs are disc-compatible. There is no downside that I'm aware of apart from a couple of ounces of redundant weight.

I was thinking of BB7s but wanted to use the SLX i-spec shifters mounted on XT or SLX levers. Cleaner and less cluttered. Will BB7s work WELL with XT or SLX brake levers??? If they will work well I will go BB7.

700 wheel I like Mavic A719 or 319 ----- 26 wheel I like Sun Rhyno lites.Can't go wrong with Dyads either,strong rims.

My KM has done everything from road tour, mountain trail and urban riding on a set of Mavic A319 rims and good old Shimano Deore hubs, reliable inexpensive and seemingly bullet proof. I've used V-brakes, mechanical and hydro discs, it's all good.

I'd be inclined to put an overkill rim on the rear if this is heavy loads off road. Mavic 319 or 719 in the front with rhynolite or similar heavy duty rim on the rear.

the chukker is a great option and it doesn't matter if the sidewall is machined or not, if you decide to use rim brakes on a non machined sidewall it will just lightly reduce the braking ability and eventually it will wear it down to the clean aluminum. Idid it before on a road bike becaue i got deep v rims for dirt cheap but they had NMSW

Machined side walls are not a good thing according to some. There is a Jobst article on the Sheldon archive that makes the case that they cover up poorly executed rims, and that the process exists to reduce initial brake squeal. You need rims that will work with caliper brakes, but you do not need machined surfaces.
