Hit a Dog. Fork and Wheel Question?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hit a Dog. Fork and Wheel Question?

While at the front of a fast pace line a dog came out of nowhere and I hit it. I drove myself to the emergency room got a cat scan and luckily came away with only a ripped up kit and major road rash.

My front wheel is really out of true. It won't make one revolution without hitting the brakes. It's a Fulcrum Racing 1. Can it be trued again?

Also, I cleaned up my bike and inspected it for any dings or cracks. It seems my skewers handle bar tape and pedals bore the brunt of the impact. No dents or cracks. What I'm worried about is the carbon fork. I went over it as well as I could and there are no scratches or any indication that it was in an accident. Should I be worried about the structural integrity of the fork?

Thanks

Get it inspected by a bike mechanic you can trust. That's the only way of knowing.

I would take the fork to the LBS for inspection.

Also it depends on how badly out of true the wheel is.

It needs to be, I hate people who let their dogs run out in the road, numerous times I have had to slow or take action either on my bike or when in the car.

If the dog's owner had seen this happen, I'm sure he'd be after the OP to pay for the dog's medical bills.

Why did you have a dog riding on the front of your paceline? I've had a hard time training mine to take a pull; he typically just sits on my wheel.

From the title, I thought you wanted a set of fork and wheels that can slice through a dog without slowing down the pace line....

That situation seems like a nasty crash with plenty of participants. As far as you fork, did you check the steerer tube?

Don't remember the dog only a brown blur zooming out of a field then finding myself on the ground. I was so focused on keeping the tempo up that I never saw it coming. I feel bad about that. The carnage involved 4 people who are all fine. I think the scariest part for me was getting a ride back to my car only to find out that the driver was a former gang member who just got out of prison. I felt bad for stereotyping. But as I sat there in his pickup truck all I could think was, "great, besides having to buy a new front wheel and frame I'm going to be stabbed to death too."
