Garmin 1040 Woes
Deleted my observations.
My fault for buying a POS product that has only been out for 12 months.

Not to dis on Garmin (oh, who am I kidding? Yes I am!), but this fits their M.O. After every new product release, their customers serve as unpaid beta testers for 6-9 months. After that, it turns out to be a fine product, and only the early adopters remember the teething pains.
That said, there are a few concerning points in your list.
Temperature off? Might be you're reading it in the sun, or there might be a temperature miscalibration. I subtract 5 degrees (or maybe a bit more) for sunny readings. The mis-cal option would be difficult to correct now that it's out in the field.
Sounds like it might have a long filtering delay in your current software load, but I'm just speculating.
