I am someone's HERO!!
I biked to my chiropractor - in a continuing attempt to get my back working again - and while I was sitting in the waiting room, a much younger guy came in wearing a "Club Toyota Bicycling Racing Team" Tee Shirt" (Team sponsored partly by the chiro).
He was an outgoing guy, and he noticed and remarked on that I had biked in, and was impressed, even though it was only 5 miles.
He then asked how far I was biking weekly, and I told him about 150 miles per week, Then the conversation got around to my age, and I told him I was 70. He went ecstatic, telling everyone how great I was, and stating "You are my Hero!"
Now, I am not sure if this is a compliment or maybe I should think about ageism?? Nope, I am going to take it as a compliment.
Anyway, after a variety of treatments, I rode to our hilly section and challenged some hills. I won .

You are my hero as well. But don't get a swelled head - there are several others here who also are my heros.

I love these little stories. Absolutely a compliment. Just today, one of our group, age 70-ish, told of riding on his own earlier this week up Glenview Rd., a known cyclist-abusing hill. He CAUGHT UP with some younger guys (I guess nearly everyone would be younger) right at the top. They got to talking and when his age came up, one said, "Way to go, Old Timer!"

15 years ago I was riding with a club in the hilly parts of VA, I was strugling and long since dropped by the "fast" group. Up from behind came an old guy, not sure his age but much older than I. We talked a bit. He was not struggling but just cruising along. He was from the UK, said he use to do 200km time trials
After a few minutes he passed me on by and that was the last I saw of him on that ride (this was repeated on several other rides after that one).
Some time later I spoke with one of the "fast riders" - the guys who get to thier cars first and are already packed up and gone before us mortals get back to the parking lot. I spoke to him about that old rider, asked him who he was. He said "Oh - you met John, he is always the first to finish these rides, he is usually gone before any of us get back to the parking lot." John was what is referred to as a "Diesel" - he would not stop at the rest stops, he just kept going. John is another one of my heros - if your out there John - I hope you are still Dieseling on.

That reminds me of something that happened when I was 35. I was surfing, and took a break to get something at the beach's concession stand. The young girl who sold me the hot dog looked at my wetsuit and said:
"You're surfing? Well good for YOU!"
