Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I look at some reviews of the CAAD12 105, The weight is listed as 8.1kg, which is 17.85 lbs. I'm assuming this is even without pedals. How is it possible then to have one weigh so little? Smallest frame size?

To OP's question: Second hand bikes! Get a nice used top-end model for under $2k. Better value for your money.

CAAD12 Ultegra probably has the best weight to price ratio.

$2k and you get Ultegra, lighter crank, lighter seatpost, and lighter wheels compared to the 105 version.

17.85 isn't around 17 in your world?

Well, it is, but in the world of road bikes, there can be a $1000+ difference between a 17.8 lbs and a sub 17 lbs bike.

I am familiar with metric, and it is quite easy to find bikes above 8 kg (aka the CAAD12 at 8.1kg) , but the bikes below 8kg all seem to be significantly more expensive.

I agree though, the CAAD12 is pretty light for its price.

It's tough to get below 17 lbs at sub $2k. I got my Giant TCR Advanced 2 (MSRP $1650), which weighs around 18.5 lbs stock, down to just under 17 lbs with some lighter Ultegra wheels that were on sale for about $300, got lighter tires, went tubeless, and converted to 1x11 with the drive-train. But yeah, that probably put me at around $2300 by the end of it. If you can find a cheap-ish carbon bike under $1700 like I did, with like 105 or better components and get a good deal on a lighter alloy wheelset, this is probably the only way to get close to what you're after. Non-name brand bikes notwithstanding.

I was looking at prices of Canyon bikes before their website lockout out the US....seems they a couple of different options that would fit your specs.

For the record, I got my 2009 BMC SLC01 for $1250 shipped on Ebay. Great condition. Weighed around 16.5 lbs when I got it, with older Dura Ace and Sram Force components.

Still weighs around the same now, after swapping out some components for better fit.

Like I said, best weight to price ratio is if you get a good deal on a used bike. But that depends on your appetite for used. It takes more time and effort to find a good used bike that fits you.

And my guess is that they are calipers & not disc. Seems like disc equipped at $2k are around 18-19lbs.

If you're going to be a weight weenie then don't get discs.

Got an older (2011) Spec Roubaix Comp, originally equipped with 5700 and Fulcrum 5's or 6's that was around mid-18's. I swapped out the the wheels for light climbing ones to save 500g, then 7900's for the 5700's to save another 530g or so. Bike currently weighs in the low 16's.

get everything used and you can make that budget easily:

2007 Lemond Victoire (950g frame) with DA 7800 $600 (craigslist)
under 17 pounds after upgrading saddle for $50 (eBay)
then found lightly used Zipp 303 tubular wheels $800 with tires (eBay)

That's under 16 for under $1500, do I win a prize?

I think my 90's Colnago C40 built up with mostly early Super Record 11s came in around 17 pounds.

It has been a while since I've weighed it, and I do periodically change one thing or another.

The one place where I think I could save some significant weight would be tires and wheels. I think if I went with some featherweight carbon fiber wheels, plus tubulars, I could drop the weight by 1 or 2 pounds, although perhaps one would have to count the difference in weight between a spare tube, and carrying a spare tire + glue.

https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-...017-94629.html

the medium is 1700 USD and comes in at a hair under 17# (7.7kg)

stock wheelset is 1725g.
saddle is 270g.
tires are 290g/ea.

you could easily knock off (2*70g + 150g) from saddle and tires to drop to 7.4kg/16.3#
wheelset do a swap-upgrade for marginal cost for a 1500g set brings it down to 7.2kg/under 16#

if you went to tubulars, even bigger savings

The trick is to be small. My wife rides a 52cm, which without a single solitary "lightweight" part, and including heavy duty tires, a full saddlebag, bottle cage, pedals, and everything else, weighs less than 18lbs.

It cost me ~$3500 to achieve 16 lbs. (16.65 with pedals and cages) on a disc brake bike. ~15 lbs. could have happened for about the same cost though with shallower rims, 23mm tires, and lighter calipers.

Rpenmanparker built up an open mold frame for under $2k that weighed under 14 lbs. IIRC.

I think mine's around 18.5 with 105 -- I'd guess the Ultegra is about 17.5 or so.
Throw some wheels on there and drop another pound easy.
The 2017's are on sale right now...if you can find one left.
