Streamers

I've been looking for streamers to match the green sparkley grips on my wife's Breeze, (it was my mother's and has been in the family since new, 1970). I started thinking I could make my own so I tried to find info on streamer history, where, when, how they first appeared, what material they were first made of cloth, plastic etc. I'm really curious about this now, wondering if streamers are of the plastic age, 1940s> or come from an earlier time. I'm thinking of making some from cloth ribbon like might be available from a fabric shop or some such. Anybody have anything to guide me?
