At this point anyone still riding a Tern should stop immediately. I wouldn't take a replacement frame because I don't believe they know how to make them properly. This company needs to recall all of their bikes and get out of the folder business before somebody gets killed.

If you agree with downtube or not, name calling is out of the question. I'm a Tern owner, and I agree that Tern definitely has issues. Their build quality/reliability is doubtful, and I'd recommend avoiding a purchase of a Tern at all costs. And, FYI, I'm a Tern owner.

Yeah, I got you. With all the constant harping on the same issues I stay clear of riding my TernJoeP24. I luv the bike,...but now I'm afraid the frame will crack in half. Is the worrying warranted? I don't know,...

A couple years ago I was giving Yan grief for saying Tern was downplaying a serious problem. We'll he was obviously right, so you're just going to have to go on being tired of people bringing this extremely dangerous issue up. Tern is a terrible company selling terrible bicycles. Don't ride one.

I do some traveling and am seriously considering a folding bike. I wanted one that has the trailer/suitcase accessory like Bike Friday or Origami. Then I saw the Tern website and started drooling over those bikes. After reading this thread, there's no way I'm going to get one of these bikes. I love riding, but I originally got started for my health. I don't want to ride one that could kill me!

Your statement is mostly true, however I do not believe this situation is normal ( hence the exception to the rule ). You should create a user account in Tern's forum, and read the thread at https://www.ternbicycles.com/us/forum...e-shearing-two . It will take hours to get through it. At first it starts innocent enough, then towards the middle you will know something is wrong. By the time you get to the end you will most likely be upset at the injustice that is continuing to perpetuate itself.....please read and tell me if I am wrong.

TERN X10 for 11 years. The bikes in perfect condition after 11 years.
TERN X11 for 7 years. The bike is perfect.
I consider those two bikes as good as it gets. If there were some duds. Which is possible with any brand. Even Brompton. Then that doesn't negate the overall quality. And satisfaction tens of thousands of other owners will attest to. The X11 is so we'll made it will still be going strong 20 years from now.

The affected frames can break at the hinge on the toptube.
Tern's U.S. distributopr has received four reports of incidents of the frame hinge cracking, resulting in minor scrapes, bruises and one sprained shoulder.
Consumers are being told to stop using the affected bikes and contact Tern or an authorized dealer. They will receive a new frame and have it installed at no cost. Consumer can contact Tern's U.S. distributor, Stile Products, toll-free at (888) 570-8376 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or they can go online at www.ternbicycles.com and click on Product Alerts at the bottom of the page for more information.
This recall involves Tern Eclipse S11i and Verge S11i, X10, X20 and X30h models. The 24-inch wheel Eclipse model was sold in a silver/black color combination. The 20-inch wheel Verge models were sold in silver/black, orange/white, red/black and yellow/grey color combinations. "Tern" is printed on the front end of the top tube and on portion of the frame. The model name is printed on the middle of the top tube.
The affected frames have a 10-character alphanumeric serial number that begins with AM1A or from AM1102 through AM1208. The serial number is stamped on the bottom bracket shell.
The bikes were sold nationwide from January 2012 to April 2016 for between $1,800 and $3,000.

No Tern is the greatest folding bike Company of alltime. So they had some welding issues 10 years ago get over it. Tens of thousands of people who appreciate great bike design and performance have.

Yes I did. Doesn't say a thing about the current quality in my opinion. Where I work we had to recall pieces too. Process improvements made us produce better quality. If you knew in what sector I work in it might get scary the next time you go on holiday ;-)
I didn't know the p9 also could later take a 10speed later on. I guess the 3kg weight difference between both comes not from the frame but mainly the use of lighter components?

That means the P9 is 2.6lbs heavier than the X10. Not 6.6lbs (3KG).
The X10 has a better spec than the P9 using higher quality components overall. Especially the wheel set. Which is kinetix pro X. With American classic hubs. About as good as it gets. Those wheels are basically frictionless. And will spin for ages. I timed the front wheel at over 13 minutes once.
