I suppose since it's just in the lab we should all pack it in and go back to talking about the same typical Bikeforums troll questions asked the 1000th time or some kind of really Fred topic such as trying to race people on group rides with tt bars. You know, instead of speculate about something new and different for once.
Naw, speculation is fun as long as you acknowledge that's what you're doing. I just don't want to read the same old arguments about frame materials here or get one of those trite "skeptical of the Wright Brothers" lectures.

Not so fast on the polymer unobtainium (PU)
This is an industry that grows incrementally.
Past the 'concept' bikes, version 1 of PU must be 5% stiffer, while maintaining vertical compilance. And 30g lighter in size M. Than the latest CF wonderbike.
Road race Version 2 must win Tour Dr France.
Screw the UCI, let's get rid of the seattube again - akin to Kestrel's 500 of old. Heck, get rid of all the 'tubes' replaced by thin PU sheets. But maybe compact that geo with a sloping tt? Super thin seatpost and handlebars? Dump th Scotts!
.......or some other not-too-too-crazy design

Polymer Unobtanium rims are next, too.
What I want to know.
Who is working on a material to yield a lightweight 20mm road tire with the compliance of today's 28mm tire, without damaging rims?

Probably see this new material used in the bicycle industry first via phone/gadget mounts.

The marketing geniuses won't even use the word plastic because it has a cheap and fragile sound to it, they'll have to come up with some other word that will make it sound very high tech, something along the lines like Nanotechnology Composite, or maybe just Nano Composite, or 3D Nano Composite and give it a fancy abbreviation of just "frame tubes made of 3DNC". Trust me, the marketing people will come up with something to tickle our minds into buying their nonsense.

Rodriguez still makes the Outlaw, and if you get the RL model it weighs 13.5 pounds, of course it will cost you $11,000.

YMMV.
there were many scoffing mechanical engineers at Apple.
some got wealthy being wrong or overruled.
not sure anybody got rich at the original Kestrel.
design, over function, may sometimes define classic - in my looks book.

How about cue the "show me a proof of concept bike" at least before comparing it to other materials.
May be be a bit too early to extol the virtues of the "2 Dimensional Version of a Polymer" bike.
BTW, did anyone else suspect this was a joke when they saw the name "Carbon P. Dubbs"? I had to google that:

Real guy, really funny name.

Banned.
Like they do with formula 1 cars, they make crazy reduction in weight below the minimum weight and then add weights at the bottom of the car to meet minimums.
The weights added tend to be lead or depleted uranium (not sure if they still use DU). They add the weights at the lowest part of the chassis to improve handling. I suppose you'll get the same results with bike.
