spoke wrenches

Hi all,

I'd like to invite commentary on spoke wrenches.

I have several in my home kit. I use a Park spoke wrench most often. It appears to have the letter O stamped on it -- is this a size? I have a couple of other spoke wrenches, one with an A and one with a B stamped thereon. All three are typical spoke wrenches, which is to say, a slotted bottom that fits over the spoke flat, with a looped handle.

I've also got a Pedro multi spoke wrench sized at 3.2, 3.3 and 3.5. I don't like it for reasons of ergonomics.

Are these things standardized? I bought the Pedro multi because I was working on a neighbor's bike and none of my other spoke wrenches fit.

Thanks!

Yes with Parktool 's wrenches 0 is the size . This may not be true with other company . For the most part yes they are standard . The cheap ring wrench can and most often will be off in fitting which can round off the nibbles .

I know a lot don't like them but I always really liked the triangle Park wrenches with the 3 sizes (0-1-2). Works great for me and its nice when you work on a wheel that might have more than one spoke size on the wheel.

All spoke wrenches wear with use. So a worn "0" might be as loose as a good "1". Park #0 Blk = .127", #1 Green = .130", #2 Red= .136", #3 blue = .156" and the long gone yellow size is unknown to me. Andy.

Parks "4 sided" wrenches really help prevent rounding off aluminum nipples. These are the only ones I use on traditional nipples.

There's also a manufacturing tolerance of a few thousandths of an inch. So a large black, can actually be larger than a tight green. So I use the color code or markings as a guide, and use whichever spoke wrench fits best.

Often the best fit is a hair tight and a nuisance to work with, so I'll use a looser one to start, and switch to the tight fit as the wheel tightens. I also use 4 corner spoke wrenches, but reserve them for the end when things are tight. Otherwise the speed and ease of a sloppier fit is a good trade off.

My favorite, Spokey, from Velofred hits all sides of nipple, nice and snug, no damage on ancient nipples.
