Bad for Cycling?
I keep reading about these claims that what happened to Lance Armstrong is bad for the sport. Bad, in what way? How is it bad for the sport? Will it affect the regular/recreational cyclist?
Discuss.

In terms of public reaction, I don't see it as being that bad. The public has become so numb and uncaring about the Lance Armstrong saga that most don't care and made up their minds of innocent or guilty years ago.
Going further into it, though, can be scary. If USADA goes to such lengths to try to bring down Lance Armstrong "in the sake of justice" then it would hardly be fair to single him out only. Every single rider for the last 100 years needs to get the same treatment and be presumed guilty until proven without a doubt innocent.

Do you think his decision is a tactic to see what the USADA has as evidence as they must now show it to the UCI and if found to be weak he will then attack it in the "court of public opinion"?

The Lance excitement will die down, many of us will find another bandwagon to jump on, I forsee a few screamin' deals now that the demand will simmer down (plenty of barely used Treks on Ebay, I suppose), and some bike shops will probably go under.
Guess my days of being the only one posing in Lemond kit are over.

You don't want my original from when I was 17. It's pretty nasty. Get them new here: https://www.prendas.co.uk/details.asp?imgID=2524 .

Longing for a Tail Wind
The cycling community knew the charges against Lance and long ago formed their opinions.
The non-cycling community will very soon forget this episode (hurricanes, rep nat conv, shootings, Aug wknd).
Lance will remain a public figure. Probable TX gubernatorial candidate.
Cycling will continue.
Will it disenfranchise the youth? IDK. Let's hope Tejay and Taylor are clean.

The answer to the OP is maybe but maybe not.
Cycling popularity seems to cycle . Big in the late 1800s through 1920s as a pro sport. Big in the 1970s ad a recreational activity. Resurgence in the 80s with LeMond. Road biking died down but mountain bikes took off. Now there is alot of interest in the sport and LA is a big part of the reason but he was retired anyways. LA was probably not going to inspire many young kids going into the future anyways and I doubt many current cyclists will quit. The growth of cycling was not linked to LA, IMO.
This may have hurt the sport's chance to become more mainstream here in the US. Mainstream media seems to think that "dirty" and "cycling" are 1 word now. But, I am not sure it really matters that much.

It's great for the sport - any sport. Baseball made some headway in eliminating PEDs. Flushing out turds like Armstrong will help to some degree cleaning up the cesspool of drugs that is pro cycling.

I don't think USADA's decision will have much of an impact on the sport of pro cycling. I am most interested in what UCI does.

Media coverage is very depressing to my mind - the public perception is that pro-cyclists dope. The deafening silence long round of "I'm here to focus on the race", "that was 10yrs ago" that we here from most of the upper echelon of the sport do nothing but impart the sense that the code of slience continues. Where are the leaders in pro cycling who will step up and take this on? I will admit I found Jens Voigt a breath of fresh air (again) https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/jens...omes-to-an-end
Why can't we have more folks with personal values like Mr Voigt?
Anyway, to the original point, as someone who has paid my $60 to USAcycling the last couple of years, I was really unimpressed with the way that they jumped/were forced onto the UCI spin. The whole episode hasn't really filled me full of joy at the prospect of giving them any more of my money for the 2013 season.

Don't think are over, what you have to do is to get a bigger helmet, or go to south america so the jivaro tribe shrinks your head a couple of pounds. Seriously, that helmet looks like too small my friend.
