Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The faster ones don't. The slower ones do. They claim to have the slim bars to get through traffic... but it narrows their q factor on the shoulders and ability to go fast, and ironically, manoeuver! The faster messengers have full bars - either flats or drops, but full and properly sized for their shoulders.

Kicking a guy in the face when he's down? That's no man, ladies and gents, I don't care if it's legal in that sport. Fight like a man, not like a drunk girl outside of a nightclub.

Now the guy stepping her bike? Kick him in the face.

Correct. The more poseur, the smaller the bar.

Kick him in the balls or knees first. He's pretty tall.

Bike messenger = same-day intercity Fed Ex.

Why spend $25 to fly something through Memphis to get it across town overnight when you can spend the same amount and get it there in half an hour?

As a former Boston messenger I'll chime in. We delivered everything entioned here. Legal papers, architect documents, bank papers, etc.. We also did some other interesting things such as: hospital bloodwork, laundry, boxes, money deposits, food, and my favorite - there was a firm with 2 receptionists who despised eachother so when they needed to both sig somehting or whatever we would show up and walk the document across the room from one to the other.

Unfortunately after 9/11 the messenger industry took a dive (could no longer just walk in to a high-rise and in that business time is money). I got out after about 2 years (including 2 full winters). It was the best job I have ever had and would do it again without hesitation if I had enough financial stability.

Cheers

Rob

I would think that the demand for messengers is a tiny fraction of what it was 20 years ago. In the legal business, the use is dramatically reduced. Most contracts allow for signature by fax or PDF. Court filings can be done electronically over the internet. Photos can be sent in email. Funds get sent as wire transfers often instead of checks.

There just isn't that much need to send hard copies of things on an urgent basis anymore.

When I started practicing law, Lawyers traded nasty letters. With at least a day for mailing, and the time for typing and editing drafts, sometimes cooler heads prevailed. Shortly thereafter we started yelling at each other by fax. Still took a little time to type up edit, and go to the mail room to send. So still sometime for reflection. Now we piss on each other with email, in almost real time. Soon we'll be using IM so we can be do combat in real time with no opportunity for reflection. Technology has been a great improvement.

How can you be a poseur if you don't know how to spell poseur? Or is that a true indication of being a poseur? I'm so confused!

The fight between the motorist and the courier happened in Kensington Market in Toronto. Only a doofus in an SUV would be dumb enough to even drive an SUV in that area, much less throw his trash out the window.

Motorist Vs Courier

Yes. Awesome:

Unfortunately the jacket could not have been pulled over his head hockey-jersey style.
