Mystery bike from the 70s
For sale somewhat close to me. Pictures are underwhelming. A few glimpses for the sleuths out there...guessing it is French or Belgian maybe?
The best set of clues. Older Simplex drops with fish-lips stay attachment. Sort of rare for French I would guess?
Obviously new parted at some point but bars and brake levers look original. Pivo stem. 105 headset though. Either nicely dirtied, or lug lining.
Only full bike picture. Chrome fork replacement or original? No braze-ons. No decals but likely original paint.
Looks like a Stronglight-Huret mix with a Shimano front derailleur.
Mavic Monthlery I think. Tubies are likely disintegrating.
Z Series replacement FD

Rim decals look exactly like those on my Mavics! My OEM tubies are long gone though.
Your pics make me think of rubber bands on those rims, not actual tires mind you....
Be interesting to read about what the sleuths here might make of your find.

Yeah, a Gitane with the foil decals peeled off and possible survivor of a front ender is my WAG.

I didn't know Gitane used fish lips stay treatment.

Unrestored Gitane Super Corsa (albeit replacement and slightly newer Campy NR derailleur) … not what you have here given dropouts but Gitane definitely had fish-mouth stay ends.
Such stay treatment is very French…ala Bernard Carre.
The cut and squashed “swagged” finish of seat stays at seat post are standard bike boom Gitane…and this bike has the hallmarks of a TdF as mentioned by others.

Interesting. Nicely finished for a bike boom bike.

At close of 1960s and into 1970, Gitane was using a Carre style willow leaf cap to finish the tops of their seat stays on Super Corsa and Tour de France models…
… but a year or so later they just started cutting a wedge out of seat stay, bending over the tab, and brazing closed as presumably a cost saving measure as well as to expedite completion of the frames as demand increased…

That fork may be a Tange especially with the 105 HS, but from that pic it also reminds me of an 80's era Motobecane fork. Pull the thing out and see what the steerer says, or just if the HS washer has a "tang" of a "flat" to mate with the steerer.

most likely, but I haven't seen many/any TdFs for the US market with those exact Simplex DOs, they usually are the other style (with "horns" and thicker material) or even very occasionally Campy 1010A, but since it's Gitane ANYthing is possible, including that this was for a non-USA market.

Campy Tipo hubs were an alternate spec with Mavic tubular rims for the Tour deFrance. Barely legible number stamped on nds rear dropout is typical also. The last foil era TdFs used Mighty Competition cranks, so the Stronglight 93 suggests early 70’s, but after the seatstay caps were dropped in favor of swaged stays. Check for front end damage.
Later TdFs dropped the braze on brake cable stop in back and used the Mafac cable hanger on the seatpost bolt.
Check out those chainstay dimples! Lots of room for fenders. Wonder if the Simplex rd hanger is intact?

Way too big for me, I was just curious what it might be. It seems pretty weathered.
