Do it the way you have planned. Why is everyone beating this dead horse? Keep it all Sante like you want to and show us the thing when you're finished!

Parts wear out.
According to Velobase that Sante’ HS has a 32.5mm stack height and a 105 is 33 something. If you take this out of a frame there is no other headset that will fit in it.

Yes. There's a difference between authentic and original. Original means it has all the parts it left the factory with (allowing for replacements due to wear) whereas authentic means that all the parts are correct for that year and model. Hence a fork of the exact typed that would have been on it, but adjusted to fit. The same componentry it would have come with, from another of the same model, from the same year.

BTW, the 24" frame and fork have the main parts of a Sante headset, lacking only the bearings and the covers, with some cosmetic issues but intact, so the 22" frame gets those. I just need to find two sets of 5/32" bearings, in a cage of the right size.

I found 6 Sante headsets on Ebay - either alone or in groupsets, and it only took a few seconds of searching.

Views on Original vs Authentic very widely, based on what's being collected. For example, in vintage watches, collectors of Swiss watches love a grubby unreadable dial, and call it "patina" rather than decay, while collectors of American watches will often prefer a clean, correct reprinted dial, or even better a correct NOS dial, which would be seen as sacrilege by the other guys. And then of course, there's the whole "Ship Of Theseus" question. I've only been collecting C&V bikes for a couple years, so I wasn't sure what the feeling was here.

Bikes are not watches. Rebuild your bike any way you want.

Tonight I stripped down the 22" Circuit. Mixed feelings about that - it's the first C&V bike I bought as a C&V bike, instead of just owning it for > 25 years.
Here are the 3 frames, with the 2 forks. The 2 1989s are in the front, the 22" and the 23". You can see the difference in the paint color compared to the 1988. It's not that the 1988's faded, they were different colors. The decals are different, too. And when built up, the 1988 had white hoods, white saddle, white cable housing, white bar tape. The 1989 had gray hoods, black saddle and tape, and gray cable housing. Personally, I like the look of the 1989 better.

If the bike can be returned to its original state, who gives a **** how "authentic" it is, or what that even means, when it's built up to ride?
