New Zealand bike tour! What do you do on tour?

Me and a friend are currently cycling from Auckland to Dunedin it is my first cycle tour. We tend to do between 60-90km a day, leave early and then relax when we arrive usually with a day off in between to explore or just too lounge around and recover.

Was wondering what you guys do when your on tour day to day?

I feel sometimes when I'm relaxing that I'm wasting precious exploration time but at the same time want too prepare for the next ride.

Full days with a day off in between, half a day everyday, or a mix thereof.

I generally plan my tours with a "destination" of some kind at or near each days ride. The daily rides are planned around those, and hopefully allow for time off the bike. Sometimes there is no "destination", but that's OK too, because it takes little time to engage locals, (usually they engage me), and conversation with them about all manner of stuff is as valuable a part of a tour as anything else.

BTW - I don't tend to over plan tours, usually having only a loose concept of the general route and timing. I make plans one to a few days ahead unless there's something constraining, like catching a ferry, or meeting someone. Otherwise, I consider being open to what happens a key to successful touring, and meeting people as important as seeing whatever tourists feel needs seeing.
