I'm on my phone so I'll be sure to check everyones links as soon as I get home.

But I had a quick, noon question. What is a co-op and how do I look for one? I'm thinking it's either a person who's into bikes that I know that can help me or a shop that I can go to?

I agree, looks more like a 52, but mine eyes doth deceive me frequently.

kristonenicholas, a co-op is a shop that you can go into and use their tools and workspace (and buy parts) in exchange for Donations of Time, Parts, Tools or Money.

Also, does anyone know where I'd be able to order new decals for a bike if in the situation where I'd have to repaint the bike?

Which was why I was leaning towards a trek since vintagetrek.com offered decals for vintage bikes

Thanks for the reply. How do I find a place like that? Do I just call random LBS and ask if they're a "co-op"? Lol sorry for the ignorance.

there's an ebay seller named 'cyclomundo' who does really good reproduction decals at very reasonable prices. I think Cycleart is the other place to go for decals.

LBS's aren't usually co-ops.
I'd do a google search for Bicycle Co-Op's, i'm not sure a LBS would be too keen on directing you to the local Co-Op as they are sort of competing entities.

The only Co-op in the area that I'm aware of is the HUB in Long Beach: https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-636901.html

Since you are also checking the San Diego Craigslist this guy is a flipper out of Oceanside, I regularly see him posting many different bikes every week. You will recognize the bamboo fence in all his photos. His bikes are usually pretty clean looking with new consumables i.e. bar tape, cables/housing sometimes tires, so I would suspect he probably has regreased the hubs. His prices are typically in the 200-300 range and generally look to be road ready. Maybe you could contact him through the link and ask him what he might have in your size.

There is another flipper out of San Marcos that appears to have a similar operation but i haven't seen a post this week. These guys typically "spam" CL starting Thursdays through Sunday.
I'm contacting the owner of the nishiki nthabks for your contribution

BBM, you didn't like the white tires on the Nishiki. How about this Fuji the same guy just put up...

By the way I don't know this guy, never met him, or actually seen any of his bikes in person.

This is very true. However, we don't have a co-op in Louisville, so my LBS (which deals exclusively in vintage bikes) put another repair stand and workbench in the back and declared, "Here. You guys now have a co-op. Come and wrench on your bikes. Bring beer and humor me when I tell you same story for the fourth time." He's a good dude.

i've found that some of these were originally mixte bikes (i.e., the giant perigee. correct me if i'm wrong) but changed to dropdown handle bars? (forgive my terminology). would that affect the geometry of the bike? if so, that's making me a lil more worrisome to purchase a bike i have no idea about soo i APPRECIATED everyone's feedback

how about this? (same model as someone posted on here, but this one is a 50cm)

I think you have a winner. You might want to contact them and assure they will hold it for you though. You're not just driving from the OC to San Diego but all the way through San Diego. Southbay/Nestor is literally just a couple of miles from the border.

BBM, you've got to love the way this guy color coordinates his bikes...

I doubt that he will hold it and I personally never trust CL sellers enough to give them money ahead of time. Were I in your shoes, I would try to get a friend or relative to get it for me.

I don't know Centurions well enough to know what was stock. If you are concerned with it being original, then the replacement fork and paint chipping would be more concerning. If you're questioning the functionality, then yes, it will be okay. Those are all fine components.

Do not PayPal. You need to see it and ride it.

Pictures are deceiving, and I've seen plenty of bikes that look great in photo's that are piles of crap in person. Better to lose it and keep looking than buy a pig in a poke.

For a daily commute/school rider, mismatched components are fine IMO. Other differ, but to me as long as they are decent quality and work well together, I do not care.

Not stock. Ironmans's were all Shimano 600, or Tri-color - I forget. That is a built-to-flip bike.

If you don't mind my asking, what on earth is the huge hurry? I really think you should wait till you get home and are able to go and look at a few bike before making a very bad choice. JMHO
