Putting the caliper behind the fork makes more sense to me, the caliper assembly being pushed against the fork crown instead of pulling on the bolt.
Why isn't this (usually) done?

It seems to me the advantage of mounting it behind the fork is that it might be more aerodynamic, but not by much! The downside of putting it behind the fork is it makes it more exposed to dirt thrown up by the tire.

An aero profile headstock and main frame tubes is also evident on the bike......
IIRC, one of our BF C&V forum members actually owns one of these team issue aero Gitanes........ the lucky dog....

Great thread. I recall watching a Tour de France video (it's on Youtube...maybe 1960) where it said the early day cyclists would often raid random people's homes and pantries grabbing food, wine and drinks and take off with them. The Tour organizers would then follow up and repay the damages to the bewildered residents.

Maybe this is a sign of getting old but seems to me that both cyclists and photographers in past years were able to do more with less compared to their modern counterparts.

Yup.. You are right. That is the post card Cunningham used to pattern the paint on the Confente Lejeunes. I reread his CR post and found my photos of the Confente Lejeunes
