You know what this sound is???
my new bike makes a new noise I've never heard before. It makes a click down near, or in, the crank when I pedal. I took it to the LBS and the guy put some teflon in there which helped when I'm just pedaling around but when I get on it, get out of the saddle, or go up hill, or just apply more pressure it starts to make this click noise again...any clues to what this is or could be?

it always sounds like it's coming from the crank but it could be literally anywhere, handlebars, stem bolts, skewers, axle caps, pedals, bottom bracket

you're going to have fun looking for the source, that is unless you go nuts before you find it.
I tool off the crank arm and cleaned and greased it and the clicking disapeared.

I've had two kinds of clicks in my bottom bracket area in the few months that I've had the bike - both would happen at a specific part of the part of the pedal stroke under a lot of effort, but they sounded a little different.
The duller-sounding clicking was in the BB after water worked its way in on a wet ride. Pulling the BB, cleaning and regreasing made it go away.
The sharper-sounding clicking was the from some loose chainring bolts. Tightening made it go away.

A friend of mine had a clicking noise at one time...we were getting ready to take the bottom bracket apart when he noticed that the cadence sensor and magnet on the arm and chainstay were too close together and hitting each other everytime he pedals.

Funny, the clicking noise I get is from my knee. Happens at the same spot every revolution of the crank. A little oil and I'm good to go. I did have a click on the right side of my crank and it would happen at the same spot , but only when I was putting extra pressure on the pedal. It turned out to be loose chainring bolts. Before I took them all out and cleaned and applied some loctite blue to the threads I thought it was the bottom bracket even though it is relatively new. Little sounds like this are really annoying and awfully difficult to nail down.

I had a similar issue with my rig - intermittent clicking - fairly random, but definitely related to the amount of force applied to the pedals. Eventually I tightened up the hanger bolt on my rear derailleur - problem solved.

Could be a number of things. I'm inclined to scope the pedals first, especially given your repro steps...I've had inexpensive pedals (Forte) have spindle creek/ticks when standing up on them...My Looks, Ritcheys, and Speedplay's never had the noise...Second spot would be the bottom bracket or cranks...from there, it becomes a lot trickier. Since you're saying it happens under load, I don't think it can be too far from the pedal train in general.

I had a nasty little clicking sound a couple years ago.
after a complete frame tear down and rebuild with fresh grease it was still there.
moved onto the hubs, turned out to be a weak pawl spring in the freehub.
the way sounds resound through frames, it's hard to tell where they come from.

As everyone has said, it could be anything. My personal solution is take the whole drive train apart, clean it, grease it, adjust it, and put it back together nice and snug. Works every time.

For what it's worth, I had a click I could have sworn was one day the derailleur, one day the BB, and another the pedals. I took off the pedals tonight and lubed the bearings and threads. No more clicking! SO pleased.

In addition to other good comments, it's very typical sound associated with cog not being tight enough. Could also be something as simple as the cable tip "clicking" on your frame as you pedal. Easiest potential fix - check cable tip location and make sure they are not coming in contact with frame.
