Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Spontaneity

How planned are your rides?

I'm sitting here getting all giddy with excitement about riding tomorrow. The weather is uncharacteristically glorious, my legs are firmed and toned by a week of hill repeats.

Dammit...I'm doing a century tomorrow. Who's with me?

Hehe........I thought this was going somewhere else.

Tomorrow looks good around here too. I like your idea.
Post your report tomorrow to compare rides.

I usually scope out my route on Google maps. I also usse some of the local club routes (they post maps and cue sheets online).

It's supposed to be nice here tomorrow, so I'll likely get in a couple of hours riding.

My wife just told me I need to be back to the house by 11 AM so that rules out the group ride I was planning on going to. Does that count as spontaneity?

That's me. I look at the local weather and see how the wind will be and plan the ride from there.

I'm leading the fred ride tomorrow, and I will be bringing a camera. You need to bring a camera too.

Can you come over and let Bailey out about 1:00 ?

When I lived on my own in Winnipeg, I'd head out on a Saturday morning and ride this direction and that direction and until I felt like returning home again ... wherever the wind blew me. I might end up covering 80 km, 120 km, 160 km or 200 km.

When I lived in Alberta, my family was close by so I felt compelled to give them an itinerary of where I might be going ... so my rides were less spontaneous. But I'd usually decide on a route on the Thursday before a weekend becuase the weather was so variable that I could never count on the weather being decent on the weekend.

Then I moved to the middle of nowhere in Australia, where we have to drive out in order to ride, and the rides are still less spontaneous, although we usually decide anywhere from a week or two before (if we're going to an organised ride) or a day or two before (if we're just riding by ourselves) where we're going to ride.

We're moving a little closer to civilisation soon, so maybe some of the rides will be a bit more spontaneous again.

I do four group rides regularly...

Sunday easy ride ~45 miles.

Tuesday fastest ride ~40 miles

Thursday fast ride ~40 miles

Saturday moderate ride ~55 miles

Ever since I started doing group rides, I don't like riding solo anymore.

Is the road too tough to start at home with a Mountain bike?

I remember the photo of the cattle in the way. I can see how that would be a problem, without fenders.

I could get out with a mtn bike on days when it hasn't been raining ... but I'm not so keen on doing a century or something on a mtn bike when I have a more comfortable bicycle to do a century on.

On a day when it has been raining, getting out on any bicycle would be a problem.
