compact crankset for sport touring build
hello all,
picked up a Soma Stanyan 18 that I'd like to build up as a sport/touring bike (700x35). I climb a lot, 50+ yrs, and so i like the idea of compact crankset & like the IRD Defiant 46/30. Issue is it comes in Wide Double Compact (w/ 110 BCD for outer ring & 94 BCD for inner ring), and a "conventional" Double Compact w/ 94 BCD for outer/inner ring. Being that they are "mechanically" different, is there any advantage to one over the other?
Thanks, Christian

mechanically, there's no advantage either way. it might be argued that the 110bcd outer ring might be a tad stiffer for hard cranking, but i've not found that to be remotely important. convenience wise, it's a convenience to buy replacement rings in the future having the same bcd for both rings, but 110bcd are also readily available, too. so, that's really moot

I don't think this is entirely correct... What I see is that the Defiant can be found as a 50/34 double, which has the 110mm BCD, and also as a 46/30 double, which has the 94mm BCD. Is there a reference to where it has both BCDs on one crankset?
You might also check out the Velo Orange 46/30, which uses the 50.4mm BCD. You can't mix and match TA and Velo Orange chainrings (as far as I can tell in my attempts to mix/match), but if you use TA rings, you have a very wide range of gearing available to you.

I think the one with the 110 BCD outer ring and 74 BCD inner ring goes by another name... <checks google> "Lobo"? It also uses an external bottom bracket, so that's the appeal of that one.
As far as replacement rings, I think the lesson we're learning is to buy them ASAP if you have any doubts.

I use old sugino 94-58 mountain cranks for touring sometimes and I love the selection of 94mm bcd rings. I've got a 29 in that size. Pairs with a 46 it would be very nice.

yes, on the description for IRD Defiant Compact it has the BCDs listed. One has 1 set of bots (94 bcd) while the other, they call "double wide" has 100bcd & 94 bcd
