Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hitch is getting installed on the Mazda tomorrow, Lily does not agree on the bike rack though. She thinks 700 for a kuat sherpa is ridiculous. She’s not wrong, but all the other brands that have anything close to similiar are all 700 or more.

What hitch are you getting? I'm in the market. For the record, I have the top end Kuat because my shop gave me a deal to get it off the floor. People wanted cheaper options.

The Sherpa is the best rack I have had when considering the security and weight of the unit. Highly recommend! Get the dock also so you can store it on your garage wall.

Just going the U-haul route. 2inch hitch, no bells or whistles.

The 1up is pretty sweet. That's what we have on the Prius. Made in USA too

In case you are wondering, that is not our Prius

455.00 holds 3 bikes. Seems well built, I havnt seen anything about bike locks.

Sherpa: Pros: Bike lock, warranty, looks good
Cons: Expensive, heavy, only holds 2 bikes
1up: Pros: Price, weight, holds 3 bikes and you can get add ons
Cons: Kind of ugly, no locking mechanism.

They are all about the same. A 1-Up double starts at $700. Then you add the accessories you need.

Just saved you $200 on a new Sherpa: SHERPA 2.0 - 1.25IN - 2-BIKE RACK - BLACK METALLIC AND GRAY ANODIZE 896581002690 | eBay

The Kuat Transfer is $500, but not nearly as nice.

That $455 is for one bike on the 1-Up. A second bike tray brings that to $700: 2" Heavy Duty - 1UP USA (1up-usa.com). You have to click the number of trays you want.

I've been leery of those things since somebody posted a picture of a CF wheel where the rim got distorted from sitting in the exhaust plume for too long.

Where are you getting that the Sherpa is heavy? It's one of the lightest racks out there.

The double 1-Up is 54 pounds.
The Sherpa weighs 32 pounds.

Your Googling sucks for being such a young guy!

Those stories result from tailpipes that end really close to the wheel. I have zero issues with that type of thing having used hitch racks lately on 3 cars and carbon wheels.

I have a heel spur. What fun. The only time I really notice it is when throwing the leg over the bike, horse mounting style. And then ‘notice’ isn’t the word that comes to mind. More like excruciating.

Naw, read the specs. Single tray holds 3 bikes, double only holds 4.

I like the way the 1-up looks, sort of industrial and heavy duty. You can get it in black if that matches your vehicle better.

You can only get a 1.25" hitch installed on a Prius (AFAIK) so I got the quick rack single plus an add-on. I never put anything heavier than a 25 lb MTB or light road bike on there anyway. At least half of the time I am taking a bike it is just one so I don't use the add-on all the time.
