Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But it's free.
Seriously, even the "full" ride is by no means a "sportive," just an excuse to get a big bunch of cyclists on the road at one time, "exploring" some part of town, which is fun in its own way sometimes. Like I suspect the 5 Boro Bike Tour was before it got ridiculously huge.

It's fun. Good opportunity for just cruising around the borough. I get a kick out of riding on a highway, closed for the event, where normally you would be killed in less than a minute.

But if all you enjoy about cycling is all-out hammering, it's not the event for you.

Indeed it was. I remember the very first one as a bunch of cyclists rode through my neighborhood and I wondered "WTF is that? How can I get down with them?"

The following year I was riding with them. It was indeed a lot of fun back in the 70s and early 80s before it got too damn big, although I did one about 2007 or so regardless, just for the nostalgia.

True...and it is for a good cause. Nevertheless, I ride out of the Bronx to go...ride.
