I was going to ride yesterday, but the ongoing confusion over the new Covid Tiers* meant I couldn't do the route I planned (we're right on the edge of a Tier 3/4 boundary), so I thought I'd relate another ride out to meet my wife from work on Wednesday afternoon; as her shift was at a more sociable time I went the long way round and took my time.
I went south out of Weston on the A370; roadworks a mile along had produced a queue of traffic a good 200 yards long - I can't help feeling smug when I'm filtering up a line of cars
. Once past the traffic control it was up into Bleadon and onto the lanes through Loxton, up over Webbington hill, then down into Cross and Axbridge. Turning off at Axbridge brought me onto the southern stretch of the Strawberry Line, through Shute Shelve tunnel (For those interested the tunnel is unusual in that it's not lined, the roof and walls is the bare rock it was hewn out from),
Out of the tunnel heading into Winscombe I diverted off the Strawberry Line for a couple of miles, as the stretch between Winscombe and Sandford is not very well surfaced, and there were a lot of people on the trail past Shute Shelve. I picked up the Strawberry Line again in Sandford, and followed it round to Yatton station, stopping there briefly for a hot coffee (I love my Deboyo bottle) and turn my main lights on as dusk was falling.
From Yatton I followed the same route as the day before into Kinston Seymour, but with time in hand I followed the lanes right out to the wall. Very quiet lanes, with no traffic except farm vehicles, but consequently very muddy and rough in places.
Coming into Clevedon I had time to ride up to the sea front and see the pier, before turning back into the town to meet my wife.
*Got an answer in the end thanks to Audax UK - it seems as we're in a Tier 3 area we can ride into an adjoining Tier 3 area, provided we don't ride across this area into a third Tier 3 area. And we can't ride into or across a Tier 1, 2, or 4 area. Confused yet?

Rang in the new year with a somewhat cold, somewhat hilly ride. About a mile in, spotted this little Bianchi frame with a free sign. Figured if it were still there at the end of my ride I’d grab it. It was, so I did. Geez, it’s made out of lead or some such. But the price was right (also included SR bars and stem, Weinmann brake levers, SunTour stem shifters).

I test fitted it with a 700c rear wheel, and it lined up perfectly with the DiaCompe 610 brake, so maybe intended as a hybrid? Also found an appropriate short-steerer, equally low end fork in my stash though it’s orange. I’ll paint it black when the weather warms up. And I’m glad it came with the seat post as it’s the kind with the quill as the seat lug is a big unslotted solid thing, a la cheap Japanese bikes from the 70s. Getting that BB out will be the biggest challenge. Spindle does not move at all.

It was 63 today, but I guess since I’m a glutton for punishment, I decided to go ride up in the mountains where it’s usually about 10 degrees cooler. I don’t think it broke 50 up there with some wind and I was pretty chilly. Nice clear air and views forever though.

My ride buddy and I took our Mercian fixed-gears out for a ramble - but alas, no fresh pix of his KOM and my Vincitore today. We did take in one of the better loops, and on my way home I grabbed pix of the Cambridge Park trail when I stopped to put on my jacket. I got in 26.8 miles, which makes a nice enough start to the year.

FINALLY!
1st ride of the year this morning.
Roads were wet but at least it wasn’t raining when I started out from home.
Ride out east a couple of miles and then turn onto the Middle Fork Road....
This out n back forest service road is becoming one of the most popular cycling roads East of Seattle since it was paved several years ago. There is a good reason for this.
The road pretty much exists to give access to recreational users on State and National Forest land in the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River Valley. On weekends during nice weather it can get quite busy,
That wasn’t the case today. I counted 3 cars that passed by me during the 2 hours I was out on the road. Saw no other riders.
I noodled along stopping frequently to take pictures to share with you what this road is like on a quiet winter day.
It began to rain again on the way back home. Not bad, fairly light at first but increasing intensity.
Nose running, Fingers and toes a little cold but the rest of me quite warm and dry.
Back home refreshed and exhilarated.

This out n back forest service road is becoming one of the most popular cycling roads East of Seattle since it was paved several years ago. There is a good reason for this.
The road pretty much exists to give access to recreational users on State and National Forest land in the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River Valley. On weekends during nice weather it can get quite busy,
That wasn’t the case today. I counted 3 cars that passed by me during the 2 hours I was out on the road. Saw no other riders.
I noodled along stopping frequently to take pictures to share with you what this road is like on a quiet winter day.
It began to rain again on the way back home. Not bad, fairly light at first but increasing intensity.
Nose running, Fingers and toes a little cold but the rest of me quite warm and dry.
Back home refreshed and exhilarated.
