So, I was telling about the old tramways that used to choochoo on our island. This is part two. Today I tried to find traces of this line, between Dirksland ('Land of duke Dirk') and Stellendam, a coastal town.
This is the house in Dirksland where they used to shoe the horses. Outside of course.
well, on to the next village: Melissant. This is the old tramway track, now an ordinary road. The old station has disappeared.
After this short stop we continue to Stellendam. That was a long way to go for the tram ('Langeweg') and indeed it is a... ehm... long way.
Hey, what do we find here?!
Can you hear the chitchatter of hoofs and rattling of the cart wheels... nearing one of the tramway crossings?

Went out for a brisk 21 mile ride on the 1951 New Hudson Silver Arrow this afternoon, anxiously waiting for evening to fall when my wife and I will attend our first concert since the pandemic began. We'll be seeing the local symphony orchestra perform a couple small pieces along with Nikola Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade in full, which I'm very excited about... It turns out that the piece premiered on October 28, 1888 in Saint Petersburg, which is one hundred years to the day before I was born!

First ride in 2 weeks - only can ride on weekends at this point. Rode 60 up north. Temps in the 40s, legs in the 30s. I called my wife and told her I was bringing home some "frozen ham".
We've had a brown fall. Not the best fall color, but decent temps until recently. Looking out over the prairie.
Spotted the Arthur M Anderson steaming along in the distance. Launched in 1952 and part of Great Lakes lore.
Most of the leaves are down at this point. The ravines are looking pretty bare.

Wisconsin was once covered by 5 million acres of old-growth oak savannah. There are still a few stands of old oak in the county where I live.
Yesterday I discovered that one of my favorite routes, a very quiet and little traveled two lane county road, had this old oak with yard-wide trunk felled, along with forty-three other roadside trees on a short section.
This is like the fourth round of deforestation on this road in the past few years.

I wish it were that simple. When covid hit I stopped going to my office. Before that my daily commute had been 35 miles round trip. So I set up a trainer indoors. That make it too easy. But yeah, weather has something to do with it.

This past weekend was dry, and the famous South Store Cafe (just outside of Beaverton, Oregon) has re-opened for indoor dining, so @Andy_K and I planned a fairly short, flat route to stop by to eat some of their wonderful pastries. We didn't take many pics, here's one I dredged up from the Neal Lerner Invitational ride in front of the cafe:

It was cold and foggy at the start. Somewhere around 8 miles out, however, an almost imperceptible climb brought us out of the fog and into the sun. Superbe!
Getting ready to make a turn on a country road I suddenly felt as if I had dropped my chain, but I hadn't shifted for a few miles? Andy pulled along side of me and pointed down the road. Either a dead snake or a dead chain was curled up on the asphalt. Merde!
What's wrong with this picture?
I figured that either Andy or I had a chain tool between us to fix this - Fantastique!
But there was no joy in Mudville. It was time for the dreaded Call of Shame. Quels imbéciles!
Suddenly a white Subaru Forester appeared, slowed down and stopped. A young lady opened her window asked if we needed any help. I jokingly asked if she had a chain tool. She pulled over to park. Comme elle est gentille!
Alas, she did not know what a chaintool was. She called her father, who was just down the road. He had not this device. Comme c’est triste!
But no, this angel sent to us by the Bicycle Gods would not give up, sending out a group text to her many friends. One replied - "Is he looking for a chain breaker?" Clearly this friend knew something about bikes. I answered "Oui!" "Does he know how to use it?" I replied, "Mais bien sûr!" She jumped into her car and said she'd be back in 15 minutes! Quelle chance!
Nine minutes and 37 seconds later The Wolfe pulled up and parked, and The Angel jumped out holding a full tool bicycle tool kit, enough to completely disassemble and reassemble my bike. Of course it had a chain tool in it. I rapidly effected the repair and handed the tool kit back to the young lass. Merci beaucoup!
When she told her dad that she was with a couple of bikers, I told her that her father was probably picturing a couple of Hell's Angel types. She said not to worry, both her and her father were drummers in bands, and were used to that type, then invited us to a party they have every July called Chickenstock. I thought for a moment, and asked her "you mean like Woodstock?" Yep! So now Andy and I are searching the Interwebs for such a thing. All I have found is something occuring in Fairbanks, Alaska. I know my family in California thinks we live near there, but...
Now I'll need to start a ride with the incantation Qu'est ce qui pourrait aller mal?
