Is there something you can use that's best to prevent a bike from being stolen? I just have a long bike lock that I wrap around my seat then thru the back wheel then on the frame. It's a coded lock.

No. There is no lock, no chain, no combination of locks or chains .... you can ride a $5 beater or whatever .....

When I park in front of a store I usually use two locks and chains---fairly stout---just so people can see that the hassle of getting through the locks is worth less than the bike---and I only lock bikes I can tolerate losing. I know it is a risk but I also know my odds are okay if I don't leave the bike in the wrong place or for too long.

There is nothing out there that is 100% guaranteed to prevent your bike from getting stolen.. If a pro bike thief really wants your bike, they will get it no matter how good your lock is.

Correct. Theft is part of every day life all over the world. But my understanding is in Japan the Yakuza, Corporations, and the state all team up to steal from the populace, but petty crime is almost non existent.

My guess is the only safe place to park a bicycle unlocked is the Antarctic Meteorological Research Centre.

I tend to agree. Similar situation out here in the Middle East. Little petty crime and VERY little theft. It seems that local legislation is sufficient deterrence - certainly there is no recidivism ;-)

I lost a sled, 6 huskies and a C130 (ice fit) from there.

But not a bike, so I guess you are correct.

Trying to sort out who if anyone is being tongue-in-cheek. From what I find the AMRC is at the Univ Of Wisconsin Madison which I imagine has its share of crime.

Or are you referring to a data-collecting site like this? Doesn't seem like there'd be much use for a bike there.

I lost a sled, 6 huskies and a C130 (ice fit) from there.

If serious how did you lose a sled, dogs and an aircraft?

Been some years since last enjoying Aspen, Co in summer and certainly don't ever recall seeing any bike locked up.... we're talking nice fine rides, too. Left out overnights, whatever. It crossed my mind, probably some would like their nice bike to disappear as an excuse to go burn some pocket change and buy another new one. Same with ski's. Lol

Carelessness. I'm not proud of it.

Honestly parking it in a place without many drug addicts or homeless people is 90% of the battle.

France has a lot of bike theft, so I keep my expensive bikes in my cellar and my garage, my everyday bike is 1992 Peugeot Chenonceaux. I had once its rear wheel vandalized and shifting system damaged. My bike has always two locks around it when I park it. My door is always locked twice as a matter of precaution even if I live in the same small quiet town since 41 years, some houses from the neighborhood were robbed some years ago, so better be careful.

Dam, ain't that the truth. Bourbon for me though. And, it's not bad for you!

probably have to come to a complete stop, unclip, and put a foot on the ground at every stop sign, or it gets the hose again….
