How much air goes from the tire to the pump when you plug it on the valve?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

True, until you make your first pump that does release the valve, so that you can have a pressure reading in the first place.

One solution for presta valves is to loosen the top nut, tap the nut to break the seal, then screw on a Schrader adapter and use a Schrader pump head. No air will be lost. Apparently, some mini-pumps also have this problem, where air is lost while removing the head.

Correct. Highly compressed helium in a tank weighs more than an empty tank.

It was somewhere between 4 to 5000. The trailer was left on a scale while loaded. That's how they measured.

Lose air into the pump? Why would that matter? Aren't you going to pump it up anyway? And it can't be because you need an accurate pre-pump reading if the valve doesn't open.

Solution to what? Why would anyone go through all that? Just put the chuck on and inflate the stupid tire. Take the chuck off quickly and go ride. No problem.

What happens if you do a fist pump? Is there triumph or affirmation that the correct amount of air is in the tire?

If we have a good supply of tire pumps we can beat a lot of them.

Well, I have 2 floor pumps, 4 various sized mini pumps, a Zefal frame pump, and a C02 inflator.

That's a good start. I have 3 floor pumps, 3 mini pumps and a CO2 inflator. This horse doesn't stand a chance.

Some never get it. Mind you, if you are losing air into the pump hose, then in the case of the minipump, you might still lose the air into the pump body unless you hold the handle tight down.

Also, pump is not an air pressure checking device. When I take my pump from its place, you can be damn sure the tire needs some air added to it and the gauge is used as an indicator when to stop adding. I repeat, it is not to be used just to check, when you don't intend to pump air. For that, use those small gauges made for the purpose, ie. not part of a pump.

It seems people consider air pump such a simple device that it is beneath them to devote some thinking as to how it operates, or in the case of some chinese knock off pumps, how they should be operated correctly.

I recently sheared the stem off the tube in my front tire while removing the pump. So in that case the answer was around 75 pounds. dave
