These are making me want a cat. It's been fourteen years. For now I'm making do with some ferals in the back yard.

Catnip hasn't trapped any cats yet, it's now 3 feet high.
There's 3 local cats that come through the garden, the ginger one was sat 4 feet away yesterday and didn't partake.
But the bees love it, and the smell is rather nice - very 'herbal' in a 70's way

Catnip at 72 days :

Update 2023/08/23
Something has been trampling in the catnip, then spotted the tortoiseshell cat rolling in some dry deadheads.
Just need some pictures now ...

How feral are they? We've had some "feral" cats that once encouraged to come inside refused to leave, and truly feral cats who run if they catch you looking at them.

We have one, Indy, somewhere in between; he was someone's cat, but a year-and-a-half ago he got out and his humans were never able to catch him. We've started to feed him on the front porch; he's super skittish, but he's developed this habit of dashing inside a few feet then back out; we're hoping to convert the dash into a stroll. Not that we can afford another cat, but what else can we do? I don't know who his humans were or where they are, and our shelters are overflowing.

All this to say that if you're lucky one of your ferals may adopt you.

I bet if you have other cats, and got rid of those other cats, Indy would become comfortable coming in much quicker.

Cats hate other cats. Except siblings, maybe, sometimes. It’s one of those things it’s really hard for people who are emotionally attached to their cats to see.

I’ve seen it. Someone claims “This cat is skittish, afraid of people, etc etc.”
The other cat disappears, maybe runs away, maybe run over, but it’s gone.

All of the sudden skittish cat comes out, gives and receives affection, etc.

If I ever get another cat, it will be one.

They are very feral. They run into the woods when I go out to fill the bowls. They come back cautiously to eat. The kids named them Lizzy (runt we hope adopts us), Buttons and Moo Cow. Wife bought a bunny hutch and lined it with hay for when the nights get cold.

We maxed out at 6 1/2 cats (Lucy lived under the porch and preferred to stay there); now we're down to 17 year-old Junebug, who might be starting to show signs of dementia, or possibly just an overall decline, we're not sure. None of our cats really liked each other, except for Shadow (big, muscular, bully) and his mom Gabby. We'll see how it plays out. Funny; I've wanted an orange cat forever but the ones that find us are always monochromatic black/white/grey.

Good luck with Lizzy! BTW, you can make shelters using two nested plastic tubs and straw; there are tutorials on YouTube.

Had a really sweet orange and white cat when I was in Jr high.
She slept in my socks and undies drawer and greeted me every morning when I’d get dressed for school.

we had 3 cats all adopted at different times and they all 3 got along great. two female and one male. of the 3 cats two totally were totally neutral to the dog and one loves the dog. The dog on the other hand loves cats and surprisingly enough most cats like him. but he is pretty gentle.

Ceramic infrared
My next door neighbor set up a box on their side porch for a feral cat. Winters occasionally get down below 20F here, so I gave them my old ceramic 75w bulb and an old shop clamp reflector. I had used it for my indoor cat when she got old and was cold all the time. The deep infrared heat goes right through their fur, I think. It's quite effective. The feral cat would sit 8 inches away from the bulb for hours when it was cold.

How expensive are those to operate? I'm not sure if the infrared bulb or the heating pad would be better for Junie.

After some rigorous intelligence work that involved plenty of highly sensitive espionage, international intrigue, and extensively trained, globetrotting operatives, we've finally been able to expose Mars's dastardly, evil, and heinous plan to dominate our bedroom: to slowly but surely melt our hearts and take over the bed, eventually taking away all of our ability to resist and occupying the room for himself as the supreme ruler.

this is where Lizzy parks and waits for her (his?) food every night. Bad picture, it's far from the house. She came halfway up the slope to me last night. I sit and talk to her.

Lizzy's head markings remind me of Alfalfa from Our Gang:

how are you doing with the placement of the two latest litters in the neo-natal ward there at Sjanzier Manor?

did Mrs. Sjanzier permit the retention of Spottie?

Is that poison Ivy behind Lizzy? Or blueberries? Some people don't think cats or dogs don't know what you are saying to them, but they get the gist of it.

that area is mostly raspberries, but I get poison ivy on occasion when harvesting the berries.

last night, her brother Buttons came more than halfway up the slope to me and my daughter until my MIL came out her door and scared him back into the woods. So close.

I’m cat sitting for my niece while she and her hubby are up in Acadia . Atticus is a great house guest I’ll have him stay any time.

I was getting ready to do dishes. He’s right in front of the sink. How do they get in that position.
