If all goes well with the weather, using a route googled " south station/boston to union station/worcester"
I tried copying the link here but I couldnt get it to work right for me. make sure you use the bicycle tab when
selecting the route on google. also carrying the Rubels maps for any last minute changes

Yeah, so far google bike maps haven't been too good to me.
I try to go over every inch of them and make any necessary changes before I leave, though.
A good carrying map would be ideal.

I have done this ride! Let me tell you one thing, don't follow route 9 the whole way which is what google normally tells you to do.
1.The best way to do the ride is go up the charles river to Watertown square
2.then jump on route 20 and stay on it for like 35 miles
3.That will basically drop you off on route 9 in Shrewsbury
4.continue on the westward heading on route 9 for like 1/2 a mile and you will cross the bridge into worcester.
5.At this point route 9 becomes highland street (It's worcester's route 9) it will intersect main St after you have gone up and down a totally killer hill once you cross the bridge.
6.The intersection of main street at a really big like 6-8 way intersection from highland (route 9) will aim you right towards Union Station.(Note: you will hit this intersection right after a final descent down a big hill then over route 290)

Thanks. I found a route via 117 and a lotta back roads till I hit the the RT9 bridge. I am going depending on the weather Tues( maybe wed). Gonna head for Auburn to a motel and head to 9 Westward the next day

PS had state police tell me over the phone 20 from Boston to Worcester is off limits to bicycles

Really? hmm, good to know.
I decided to try a bunch of back roads, basically paralleling rte 9 most of the way.
I don't know about the shoulder conditions, but they seem pretty low-traffic.
I ended up getting too sick to go just as I was trying to head out on Friday, so I'll have to wait for another week.

Good luck with 9. I've always tried to avoid it. I don't know how it is west of Worcester, but I hear it's no better.

The East Coast Greenway has a route and cue sheet from Boston to Worcester:

https://greenway.org/

I haven't taken it, but I have tried their route from Boston to Newburyport, and it was reasonably bike friendly.
