They sell tires in stores now. Bike shops, sporting good stores, Dick's, even Walmart. Or you might be able to find something in a nearby dumpster.

Just go without tires. Your rims are plenty tough.

OK, it is boxed up and ready to go. This is probably going to cost a minor fortune at the post office, so could you please verify I have the info correct, and that SLAC/SSRL will accept a package addressed to what I assume is not your real name?

Some threads started popping out near the bulge, like it is seated correctly and the threads are coming from the face that meets the ground not the sidewall. I first noticed something after throwing throwing the bike in the back of a pickup truck this morning, maybe it hit something sharp in the bed of the truck? In any case its clearly getting worse so I'm replacing it, the "hooked rim" tire didn't work so it went back in the pile, and unfortunately I couldn't find another tire so I have to go with this knobby 38, and this 38 is kind of throwing me off.

For one, the pressure is called out in kilopascals, is this some gravel thing or something? It also calls out a direction of rotation, which I thought was kind of absurd, is that about the tread? It can't matter much can it? Also the tire just looks absurd on the rim, the wheel is kind of aero and measures 21.14 mm and the tire measures 37.09 mm, for a ratio of about 1.75:1. Is that pushing the limits of how big of a tire can fit on the rim? When first inflating, the tire did not properly seat on the rim even thought I was being careful (had my safety glasses and earplugs in) and the second time I got it to seat, but I wonder if it is liable to blow off the rim in the future or now that I got it seated it should be OK.

edit: tire is rubbing against the brake housing when fully in the dropouts, I backed it out slightly and it clears. Still plenty of clamping force and it’s straught enough that the shifting is fine, so I’m not TOO worried about this.
Re-read 3alermer's post. He explained it all and you seem to have blissfully ignored what he said. Either the tire is not seated in the rim (easily visible by looking at the sidewall as the wheel rotates) or the casing is damaged. Those are the only two causes of what you describe, assuming the wheel itself is not out of round/true.

...there's a federal probe going on over the recent electrical fire, that was quite exciting, as far as such events go. I wouldn't use my real name either.

Unrelated to the mechanics of the bicycle that prompted this post, I had a bad crash this morning, one of the worst ive had. Will not be able to work until Monday at the earliest. I am more comfortable in person than in email, so on monday I will speak to shipping and receiving and see if they would receive this package. Thanks a lot, but yeah there is a chance they won't. Heck me posting my real work info here was probably dumb, you could really screw me over if you sent something illegal.

but yeah thanks a lot, please don't send it if postage is a lot, and also good call on waiting for my confirmation that they will receive it

If only there were a private message feature one could use for things like this.

Much of the data for my entire scientific career has come from SSRL. Apart from anything else, I would have a lot to lose if I did something stupid like that. I do know that the national labs are very cautious about packages, etc. So please check. I can send it elsewhere if you want, or deliver it myself at some point. It is in the car now. I hope you are better soon. A bike co-op could get you set up on an inexpensive but safe bike. Take care.

A coworker's husband was a physicist at SLAC, years ago. She told me that one night, they were discussing something, and he said, "It's not rocket science. And if it were, that's okay, because I'm a rocket scientist!"

I suspect he may have been exaggerating his qualifications a bit, but I laughed.

Larry/Gabe - I have two pair of old tires with a lot of life left in them. I have better tires so I'll never use them, but if you want them, I'll bring them to September's C&V ride - Saturday September 2, at the rock wall, Canada and Edgewood. That, and those other bits I offered you months ago that are still in the trunk of my car.

I thought forum harassment only went on in the public forums.

Just turn it off, and then invite (make a "friend") those who you need to contact, or need to contact you.

BB Admin always can PM you, even if you have everything turned off.

Ha, there's ANOTHER answer I didn't think of in the "what don't you miss about old bikes" thread! I HATED our cheapo trunk bike rack in the 70's. Damn wheels sat so low, I had to remove them to use the rack. That's a useless bike rack if you ask me!
