Can road shifters be used with mtb derailleurs?

My friend is building a hybrid bike - Lynsky Sportive. He is using a road bike drop bars and has fitted a Dura-ace 10 speed bar end shifters. He is using the Shimano XT 10 speed Dynasys front and rear derailleurs. The front is not a problem as the left shifters is running on friction mode. The right side however can only work in index mode, and no matter how we tried we could not get it to shift through all the gears. Is there a compatibility issue where road shifters cannot work with mtb gears? The right shifters doesn't have the option to switch to friction mode and both are for 10 speed.

Yep. 10-speed Shimano MTB rear derailleurs use a slightly different pull than the 9-speed ones.

9-speed ones will work, but IME do not shift quite as well as a true road RD.

As you may see if you read back thru the past threads on the topic..

Opinions differ.. issues tend to be with the FD , more than the rear..

The Dynasys rear derailleur has an incompatible actuation ratio. Any 9-speed Shimano mountain type rear derailleur will work perfectly with the Shimano 10-speed road shifters. This has been covered many times in the forums.
