Yet another conversion question ...

Hi,
I have a 1990s Trek 820 (Chromoly) which I'm thinking about converting to a tourer/bike packing.
(I know that there are more designated bikes out there but I'm not into buying another bike)
Anyway,
The 1990s frame comes with a 65mm suspension fork which I'm thinking about converting to a 430mm (axle to crown) rigid fork with eyelets for front rack that I own.
According to Trek (https://www.vintage-trek.com/Trek-Fis...manualTrek.pdf) , I can run up to 430mm rigid fork but I would appreciate someone's own experience

I don't know the specifics of your bike, but yours sounds like a solid (rigid?) plan? As long as the fork you are suggesting is available and not too dear.

I already have the fork ... my only concern is the lifting of the front (although, according to Trek, allowed)

I had a 1992 ? Trek 820 that I used for touring for several years but it came with a non-shock hard tail fork to begin with. It seems to me, you have the fork, why not just slip it in place and see how you like it. Is there that much difference if your shock fork is locked out vs the cro moly fork? I say go for it.
