Summer Rides in Philadelphia?
Looking for an excuse to visit this area in summer 2014. A bike ride would be a good one. Any PA residents, and I know there are some, your input would be welcome. A metric century event with shorter options for a friend might be nice.

Lots of century rides in the Philly area.
Tell us a bit more about what you want.
Do you want a ride that includes the historic district?
Challenging ride that includes hills?
A scenic country route?
A flat ride near Philly?
Any specific timing; spring, summer, fall?

I've been away from Philly for ~ 10 years now, but once you figure out the street navigation to the trailhead near Manayunk you can put on plenty of miles after heading to Valley Forge. See https://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/.
If you take a diversion before Manayunk, you go up the scenic Wissahickon valley which would get you pretty close to UPenn's botanical garden and some open roads. Can get hilly.

Are you looking for organized rides, riding partners, or just possible routes?
Here's a link to several MapMyRides in and around Philly. If any interest you, PM me and I can give you my impressions of them. https://www.mapmyride.com/us/philadelphia-pa/
Another resource is the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia. Their home page list regular rides and special events. It's a very friendly and helpful club IMO. https://phillybikeclub.org/newbcp/

Another resource is njbikemap.com Although focused on NJ, it covers eastern PA areas around Philly, Bucks County, etc. Probably best bike specific map in the country. Look closely and you'll find all of the bike trail, dirt roads and other useful information for putting together a great ride. Lists places of interest and identifies all hills with total elevation gain (little green flag indicates top of hill).

Thanks for the great and useful input everyone. I'm looking for an organized ride of moderate difficulty, but also routes I can take to encourage a novice friend who needs to ride for health and weight loss.
