Any issues with SRAM Force on 2017 Specialized Tarmac?

I've searched quite a bit for an answer to this question, haven't seen anything yet...

I'm a SRAM guy for road bikes. I'm looking to pick up a 2017 Tarmac, however they're all spec'd with Shimano. I was checking with my LBS on getting SRAM in place of the Shimano gear, at least for the shifters and derailleurs, but he was concerned that the Tarmacs may not come in SRAM because SRAM may have some issues on the frame.

He wasn't saying that's the case, just that he was shocked there's not a single Tarmac spec'd with SRAM, and assumed there must be a reason.

Is anyone running SRAM on a 2017 Tarmac, and if so, are you having any issues?

A lot of brands are not selling sram bikes. It's business decisions. There is no reason why shimano would work on a frame but sram wouldn't

Right. It is economics, not mechanics.

Well the top of the line Tarmac does come with eTap, so I assume you mean mechanical SRAM offerings?

Yes, the mechanical offerings. I don't have the budget for the S-Works/eTap

I assumed it was probably not a mechanical issue, but was hoping for confirmation.

Has SRAM just priced themselves out of the mechanical OEM market for road bikes?

If you watch the market long enough, you'll notice that the OEM parts spec seem to go in waves. Shimano led for a long time. Then Sram came along and took a lot of business. Then Shimano fought back.

A few weeks ago, I asked a rep at Lynskey why none of their pre-built bikes offered SRAM, only Shimano.

His reply was that SRAM requires large bulk orders for competitive pricing, where Shimano doesn't.

I think what you're seeing with Specialized (and other manufacturers) is that, at this point, they've sold through all/most of their SRAM groupsets ordered for the season.

They've now removed those builds from their sites – and they'll probably return again in the Spring.

i think your best bet for a SRAM Tarmac before then is going to be either a custom build, or unsold stock at an LBS.

You can buy a complete '17 spec'd with SRAM.

I am running a '17 S Works with a RED 22 groupset (Force cassette and KMC chain) and it works just fine. What have you heard issue wise?

I just finished building a Tarmac with SRAM Force/Red 22. No issues.

There is also an Expert with eTap, not sure which one you are currently looking at or your budget but those appear to be the only SRAM models spec'd. I've actually looked hard at it but would like to "try" eTap before taking that kind of plunge.

Hey bro, SRAM sucks. My road bikes had ten speed Force and Rival but when it was time to go to eleven speed, it was Shimano all the way.

Its all personal preference. Not sure one can say definitively which is better...

I am generally slow to decide if I like or hate something, so while I was on the fence about my eTap build I was not really thrilled about the potential for dead batteries.

But then I had to trim the rear DR during a race... yup, mid race.

Climbing with the pack, it was grinding between gears, and it hit me... the adjustment is right here up front. I held the trim button gave it a couple taps on the shifter, and viola! perfect shifting.

OK, NOW I AM IN LOVE WITH IT.

Compared to the Shimano electronic, the wireless aspect also appeals to me. The Shimano wire harnesses and juntion boxes and battery placements just annoy me.

OP: SRAM cabled works with any frameset that is not "wireless or electronic specific", and to my knowledge, none of the midlevel Tarmacs are electronic specific. Just make sure the frame has cable routings and you'll be fine.
