Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Giant LBS prices

I just took my wife to a bike shop to let her try out a few LIV Avail models.

The shop said the bikes were all "on sale", but the prices were $599 foe the Claris Avail, and $799 for the Sora model.

Online Giant website says these are 600 and 800 msrp.

Is there something I'm missing? We're they originally selling the Sora Avail for $1000, because the sales guy sure made it sound like it..." this is a $1000 bike for $800..."

Giant dropped prices on 2017 models. They could have been old stock. Or not. Either way, I wouldn't buy anything at that shop.

Not at this level, the Claris avail and contend have been $600 for a few years.

For 2017, (Claris level) the Contend 3 replaced the 2016 Defy 5, and the price dropped by about 9%. At the Sora level, the Contend 1 replaced the Defy 3 with about a 12% price drop.

Oh, I guess it just feels like its been those prices forms while.

Anyway, what your saying is that they have the 2016 bikes "on sale" for the same price as a new lower price of a 2017 of the same model?

Still sounds sketchy.

LBS bike prices have been coming down over the last few years (I suspect due to competition from direct on-line sellers) but it is still not uncommon to see some shops inflate the prices and then have frequent "sales" that are similar to what some other bikes shops charge as the regular price for the same bike.

There is a bike shop in the Twin Cities area that is well known for having higher than average prices but will offer "a one-time deal, just for you, today only" to pretty much every customer.

The prices are at 3 levels; Dealer Cost (lose money even assembling it), MSRP, and in between is Typical Retail Price.

Dealers get a price list for guidance, printed out, of these numbers, for each model.

When I was Giant shopping in the spring, I saw this more than once - a 2015/2016 on sale at essentially the same price as the better-spec'd 2017 that had seen a model-year price drop.

What is the OP getting? I would think manufacturer website is showing MSRP. OP is being quoted a 'sale' price at basically the same level. Even worse if the LBS is providing that cost on a 2016 model..

The 2017 Avail 1 shows on LIV's site at $810; the 2018 Avail 1 is $860. In 2016, the Sora model seems to have been the Avail 3 -- and MSRP on giant's side does in fact say it was $960.. but a bit disingenuous of lbs to market as a $1K bike that they're letting go for just $800. That said, there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between these 3 model years.. so basically comes down to color/size choices I think.

I'd look for a shop you can trust and see what they can do on a 2017. I got a message this week from a dealer who offered me a great price on a 17 he would have to order. He also stated that most of the prices appear to be going up a little for 18 models. The few models listed so far it appears to be true, price increase or spec change.
