I was at the grocery store last night looking at the different kinds of kitty litter trying to decide which brand would be best for them as I made the switch from regular to clumping litter. There were several choices, but only 1 brand came in a bucket that could be converted into the coveted kitty litter pannier by the truly hardcore commuters like bigbenaugust. Figuring I wasn't that hardcore, I bought a brand that came in a cardboard box and then drove home......

You should buy 2 of the kitty litter that comes in the buckets, dump the kitty litter out and then buy the kind you like and put them in your kitty litter bucket panniers. Problem solved.

Judge the bucket for usefulness , the stuff is good to absorb the oil leaking out on the driveway,
under that old truck/car/ Motor Bike you rarely drive .

Maybe dump some in the middle of the Drive through ATM on that Oil Slick.

I'd say keep some in the bin just in case you have a roadside emergency, you can scoop it out when you get home.

Tidy Cat litter. Cat likes it. Bucket has hinged, recloseable WP lid and size/shape is about right for making bucket-iers. Bonus - high visibility colors. Wal-Mart sells it about as cheap as anyone.

The only guy here that does the kitty liter bucket pannier thing, is homeless. I suspect he managed to get his buckets for free.

You can strap your cat to the rear rack every time it needs to "use the box" and just take it for a quick spin around the block. You get to ride instead of walk and you never need to use litter again.

Or be a wuss like the guy I saw at the grocery store yesterday and get the tiny little box that can fit almost anywhere.

I had one of those bungee strapped to the back of my folder I rode through rainy season in South Florida. Worked great!
There is a picture of it somewhere on BF servers, I cant find it though . . .

I'll have to see how they like the stuff in the cardboard box first and then upgrade to the Tidy Cat. I think I'd really embarrass my GF by riding up to her place with those on the back!

But, seriously, I rode through some of FL's worst gang territory to/from my job in Florida. Riviera Beach to be exact.
Gets lots of airtime on COPS. I purposely tried to look like a wack job or homeless paint huffer to avoid interaction
with the neighborhood people who were prone to trying to relieve you of your expensive bike.
The ugly lil litterbox'd foldie with bungees all over it was quite up to the task

Even with long stays, I find the tidy cat box to cause heel strike unless I push the mount as far back as possible on the rack and anchor the lower section to the aft strut on the rack. Hooking to the center would slowly slide the box slides forward and I have heel strike again.

I think at Petco (which is a chain pet supply store) you can buy the empty containers. The idea is that you then bring them back and refill them when you need more cat litter, but you can just use them as panniers instead.

A neighbor throws away a tidy cat litter bucket every recycle day. I'm sure anyone can scavenge for buckets if they need them; no need to base you purchase decision on container.

I've got a pair of them for touring/bike camping. I'm not homeless. Patterned them after some original Cobbworks that a friend of mine has and that I borrowed for a while. I did actually go out of my way to order plain orange square buckets online so they weren't quite so ugly though.

They used to sell the kitty litter bucket kits in Portland, the hardware is not that difficult to make.

As for kitty litter, the corn based clumping litter is our favourite... it comes in a bag though.

Yeah if you really only want the bucket you can get them free. Ask for a couple on craigslist ride over and get some that are close to you.


I like that one too. What I have been using for a couple years now is pine based. Its actually a 40 lb bag of pellets thats used for horse stalls, but works fabulous and costs about $6 a bag. I get mine at tractor supply company.

We've been using arm and hammer, supposed to reduce the smell which is important since we are in an apartment .. will try out some of the options listed here for the cat!

I don't have cats, but asked my facebook friends with cats to keep me in mind if they use that tidy cat litter, and low and behold, I now have two empty buckets that I didn't have to pay for. Friends rock!

Coroplast , its like a plastic cardboard,

in the U.S. , available for free the 2nd wednesday in November, every couple years ,
though it may be soiled with some Politician's Name and Fiction based Promise .
