Eroica California - no more?

Just checked the Eroica website, it appears the California event is not mentioned anywhere.

Anyone have news? I sent out an email to a friend who volunteers at many of them, but just couldn't wait to post his answer.

That is just so sad.
The Cambria event was just the coolest thing ever.
Great venue, nice vendors, fantastic people and so many oh so cool two wheelers.
I am so glad I was able to attend last year.

Yea, it doesn’t look good. I still have hopes but , honestly , the lack of any news is pretty much telling me it ain’t happening. We have Classic Rendezvous West to look forward to and Cino . I am interested in the CR event and will do my best to attend even though it is a very long drive for me . The Cambria Eroica was easy for me to attend as was Paso Robles , I did every year except last year , I couldn’t go , even though I was registered , due to a pesky broken hip. If , by some miracle , it proceeds it will be a tough sell. The organizers have not been forthcoming in getting information out . This does not surprise me because of past issues. Sad….

If I can make only one drive to the West Coast, it’ll be for the CR event. Eroica really dropped the ball at the last two events. Even if they bring it back I doubt I’d invest that long, 3500 mile drive to attend.

I see seven events listed from April through October, and California is not among them. Yeah, I'd say that bodes ill.

What was great about Eroica, was that it was in my backyard, and forced the issue of riding C+V. It was a silent camaraderie along the route.

I have signed up for the Solvang, and the Wildflower Centuries so far, but truth be told, I will ride a Neo-retro setup at most.

Hope it comes back!

Any particular reason there seems to be little interest in Classic Bikes Auburn? West coast bias?

For me the main reason is it is 2250 miles from San Diego, which is a chunk of change in my book.
My guess is that a fair chunk of west coasters kinda think the same.
Otherwise I would LOVE to (and hope to) go some day.

Not to stereotype or be a weinerhead but I have noticed that folks back east sometimes, really, have no idea just how far things are apart west of the Mississippi (I forget too sometimes).
Just as an example NYC to Jacksonville FLA is a little over 900 miles.
That is the distance from one end of California to the other end, just one state.
NYC to Auburn Indiana is 650 miles. That's far, but doable.
And don't even get me started on Texas (in terms of states that seem to never end)
But again I would LOVE to go to Classic Bicycles Auburn.

I'm based in Ohio during the summer so I could make it to Indiana, but I don't see anything about rides on the Auburn website. Am I missing something?

Sorry for the folks who loved the Cal-eroica event. I never made the effort to attend because the website made it look like it would be packed with spoiled rich people. I assume all the folks here who loved the event had been doing it prior to that particular marketing approach.

I would say that it's probably because it's a show, not an organized ride.

With that in mind, it sure would be nice if someone could put together a list of US and Canada vintage rides similar to what non-fixie does for European rides. I'd do it except for the fact that I don't know of any other than Cino (and now CR-West). Are there any?

It looks like Auburn is about 80 miles due west from my house. I guess I could help organize a ride from my house to Auburn and back if anybody's interested.

I'll do my best, but it will be 50/50. I'll have to navigate leaving the toddler solo with the wife, as well as the cost. The biggest challenge for CBA is the location. I can catch a direct flight from Sacramento to Chicago, but have to add the cost of renting a car when I get there, and the additional 3.5 hours to drive to Auburn. I'd love to get there, as I'm certain that a Mike Kone's event is as good as it's gets....

One advantage of CR West is that Davis is pretty close to both SF and Oakland, and most parts of the country can get there on a direct flight.

There will be rides, they were announced later last year, I would encourage anyone that can go to do so, this show brings out the best there is to be seen IMO.

All the truly big guns come out for this and there were many bargains and rarities to be had even in the parking lots.

Don't think I would ever drive it and couldn't wrangle enough to make it worth it to fly there.

I can assure you that it was not "packed with spoiled rich people". Everybody I talked to and interacted with were all very nice, personable and a true joy to be around. There was not a hint of snobbery or anything. If anyone was "spoiled and rich" they certainly were on their best behavior on that weekend.
In case you can't tell I had a fantastic time.

A reminder that the Eroica website earlier gave us reason to believe Eroica would be held in September. @mountaindave has already pre-announced Cino in September. If you were planning on going to Eroica California, consider Cino. Yeah, it's a bit to get there from the East Coast and even California, but you get two rides for the same price as one Eroica (Saturday-Sunday), the ride is gorgeous, the volunteers are top notch and actually have a vested interest in the ride (fund raiser for the local Montesorri school), you get bacon at the top of the first climb, a first rate lunch both days, one next to a waterfall, and you'll know just about all the riders at the end.

Cino.

The cycling sport and industry as whole is not in very good times. All the support is needed. And every C&V cycling event is special in their own way, shared mutual interest among all. Its such a miniscule segment, humbling with history thrown in. Ride or show events, some are more organized than others but my respects to all whom take the challenge on including volunteers.

For those naysayers, free to choose and ride your own thing. That goes well with me though sometimes I rather like a large crowd. Its no race and only to soak in the fun and commaraderie. Don't expect perfect, there's times a wait line for this or that.... no big deal. Any sufferfest with others is good too!

L' eroica US seemed to have addition problems with locality politics. Community leaders welcome but then they pour on regs, timing to their ways, always a few residents that are hypocrites, entitlement anti something or others. Until all have open arms and truly welcome, the L'eroica org can better present and plan. Who knows whatever, though can't blame to toss in the towel if cost, permits, annoying pesty regs and residents make it aggravating.

Right now the gravel race series is growing and yet the elitist of Steamboat CO, including a few crybaby ranchers are trying to choke that org.. That gravel cycling segment is the only one showing growth and interest. And CYCLIST ARE OFF THE ROAD, IN REMOTE away fromTHE PUBLIC!

So, my hats off to those organizers and hope they can make it happen.

As the former organizer for Amerivespa…..

the largest gathering of Italian scooters that included a gymkhana, a show and shine with the following awards:

furthest ridden (to the event)
best 1950s
best 1960s
best 1970s
best 1980s
best modern
best rat bike
best hot rod

a wonderful long ride each day of the event.
a swap meet
a raffle that really paid for the whole thing
and meals/beer included.

it moved from region to region, west coast, middle, east coast, middle, west coast, etc.

this way it was at least easily reached by a good chunk.

speaking of West Coast, one year it might be in San Diego, the next west coast might be Seattle. Etc.

I recognize even though i have the skill-set to organize such an event, find sponsors, etc, I’m too polarizing and would rather others plan and execute such an event than turn off potential participants.

Eroica CA got pages of grief EVERY effing YEAR from a large number of posters here on BF. Many from “cyclists” who never participated. TBH, I wasn’t looking forward to another round of that.

I don’t know who operates this https but if there was interest in a vintage ride in the area…all we need is a date.
https://www.cyclecentralcoast.com/

The BWR in San Marcos CA is April 28 and this year there will be a Road Bike division for bikes that predate gravel: drop bars, double chainrings and 28mm maximum tires. It a great course for a C&V bike with indexed shifting and SPDs. I’ll be there on my RS with 9 speed bar ends and 25s.

Some of the folks that did the nova ride on Saturday were a little more disappointed about signage and rest stops but they had treated it like a training ride and didn't prepare to be on their own.

Nobody I talked to was rich or spoiled that I could tell, only like minded, dedicated C+V folks that really do get it and understand why we do what we do.
