Shimano SL-m310 shifter problem.

So today I bought a new chain and right rear shifter for my bike. After installing my shifter the thumb paddle will not return automatically. Not only that, but my rear derailleur is having problems shifting into the higher gears after the index paddle is pulled.

Does anyone know what might be the issue?

Cable friction? Mis installed cable in shifter? More info is always nice. Why the replacements? Andy.

Looks like the SL-M310 shifter is available in both 7 and 8 speed. Do you have the correct one?

I figured it out guys. The housing was too long from the shifter to the DT adjusters. Simple fix,I thought that was the problem originally but thought it was already a little short. Oh well. sorry forwasting your time.
