Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After reading RR reports on tires, I've pretty much decided to take lab tests on tires with a grain of salt. I go through a lot of tires and switch around some when a new model of tire comes out and so far, the tests don't seem to mean much to me in the real world. Sure, there are some really doggy tires out there but the high end stuff is pretty darn good.

Despite the wider is better tests, I run nothing over 28c. In fact, my Colnago has 26c Pirellis with tpu tubes and I swear they roll better than my 28c tubeless Conti 5000 setup but there isn't a RR lab anywhere that agrees with that. Regardless, I tend to buy high end tires wherever I can get them and figure I'll be replacing them in a few months, anyway.

BTW, my E'monda is currently running a Pirelli tubeless 28c on the front and a tubeless 26c Pirelli on the back. Not ashamed at all and no one has mentioned it so far on a ride.

One observation on tire width, probably most know this, but how wide a tire measures out depends not only in the tire but the RIM. Most newer rims are wider and stretch the tire out more.

If anyone asks, just tell them you use a narrower rear tire to allow it to ride in the front tire's slipstream. They'll either look at you like you're crazy, or nod sagely as if that made sense.

I ended up getting a Lyft to the airport car rental place, and renting a Ford Escape. I only did 50 miles yesterday, and didn't really go all that hard, but when I got out of the Lyft, I got a HUGE cramp in the back of my left thigh. Luckily I managed not to get one on the other side, but I ended up hobbling inside and finding a chair while it subsided. Then when I stood up and tried to walk to the counter, it started cramping up AGAIN, so found another place to sit. Then I stood in line for a really long time, given how few people were ahead of me.

TOB had offered to pay for the Lyft to the airport, but it's also more expensive to rent at the airport, too, so he's gonna pay quite a bit. But he was so relieved at not having to take a Lyft himself that he bought us dinner from a Chinese place. So, that was nice.

Unimogs are some cool sheit. But, unless you have 40,000 acres, what do you do with the things?

I would probably just haul bikes to and from the MUPs lol

now I wish I would have gotten a pic of the Unimog we saw on that bike ride … at the time did not want to stop to take a picture or lurk around (and infringe on privacy of the owner sorta / kinda) … this past fall we rode by the area where I thought we spotted it and it was not there

Infringe on their privacy? If you drive a Unimog you are only doing so to attention ***** yourself!

I used to screw with newbies before disc brakes by putting the front skewer in backwards. When new Bicycling mag reading new guys would point out that my lever was on the wrong (right) side, I’d tell them that it was to direct the air flow past the derailleurs and front chainrings. More than one person asked if I was afraid my wheel was going to fall off since the skewer was in backwards.
