55, so that means NOW. I had no money to ride a bmx bike when I was younger, so I'm using a bmx cruiser to make up for it (Hurley Hydrous 27.5).

I was 13 when I got my first real BMX frame and built a bike. A Redline Squareback. 1975

I was 15. It was the late 70's/early 80's and BMX was just starting to explode. I saw the BMX magazines in the stores and thought it looked like a lot of fun. I rode whatever I had at the time (probably a Schwinn Stingray-type knockoff) on the local dirt trails in the woods and decided I needed a better bike so I could take it over ramps and jump with it. I started hanging out at the local bike/skateboard shop and learned a lot by talking to the workers and customers. All the BMX parts hanging on the wall displays and behind the glass counters was a thing of pure beauty to me. I bought a Mongoose frame on layaway, and was the happiest guy in the world the day I paid it off and walked out with it. Took it home and stared at it every night while I bought each component to build a complete bike. One piece at a time as the song goes. When it was complete, I rode that thing everywhere! Then I got into racing with it. Entered 2 races, won 2 trophies. I often wonder if I could have gone pro had I not discovered girls and needed a car. Lol. And now I'd give my left nut to have that bike back. No idea what happened to it.

16.Now. 15 dollars for a Fitbikeco Team trail with a thin dirt tire on the back and a 2.25 street tire on the front.

I was 10, and it was 1976. After I broke my knockoff Stingray my parents bought me a Sears BMX which really wasn't a (real) BMX bike at all. But, I jumped it till it broke and my parents then bought me a Vista BMX or something of the like. It worked and I never broke that frame. I was envious of all my friends, they had Mongoose Motomag frames and Webco frames with Motomag wheels, Redline frames, Cycle Pro's. Ugh. It was tough. I don't have one now but I plan to have one when the right one comes along. Maybe build up a 26" Schwinn Corvette or something. I did build a Motomag and a Webco about 20 years ago but then sold them due to them being too small and just downsizing. I regret selling the Webco. I mostly ride on my gravel bike now, but my roots are deep in BMX from just being young and having fun.
