Of course we learn from suffering, but I think the lack of suffering makes one weak, but too much suffering does the same thing.

You won't know your physical limits if you don't suffer, so yes, I believe it.
That isn't what all biking is about though.

Types of Suffering
Of course, suffering can be different from pain. You may become involved in some activity which causes you temporary pain, but that continued activity not only makes you stronger, but also makes you immune from further pain.
ie. Exercise
OTOH, I can actually eliminate your participation from a particular activity which actually causes you no direct physical pain at all. However, the very action that eliminated you from participation, in the future, may subject you to many painful experiences that could eventually prove to be lethal.
ie. Education
Then there's the most negative pain of all. When applied directly, it causes immediate physical, emotional, or spiritual pain. If application remains in place, life is soon terminated.
ie. Strangulation

Silvercivic, you have no idea what it was like. My father left when I was an 8 year old and my mother was an alkey. From ten years old to my second year of high school, it was hell. There are at least three people I know that I would like to locate and pay a visit. Maybe some day I'll find them. My sister locates people and she is really good at it. I haven't asked her yet but I have been strongly considering it for the past ten years.
This thread may be the impetous I need.

RJM says:
Suffering to some extent approximates your threshold for pain. However, depending upon the consequence, suffering, to some degree, is flexible.
pdedes says:
So the guy who cycles with his eight year-old son to the park, is suffering?...
I understand the basis for your premise, but that statement was just a tad over-extended.
Thompsonpost says:
We must never attempt to exceed the limit of our threshold for suffering. The art, is to learn the locations of the thresholds boundaries.

Correct. Cycling, however, is all about suffering.

And certainly worth every inch/second.

Too much suffering can cause one to say "Fu@k it" and just quit. I mean, some things just aren't worth it. Look at how many people drop out of the TdF every year.

I also enjoy the solitude and freedom of my solo rides. No pressure to try to keep up with hammerheads, and no hard looks from those who look down on my low-end bike and non-cycling clothing (even though they couldn't keep up with me the last time I did a group ride).

The guy with his eight year old going to the park is biking. However, if the park is 10km away, while the dad may be biking, the kid just may be cycling.
