Here is another big Miyata. an 82 1000. I have posted about it languishing at the bike co-op. It is mostly original except for the crank which had stripped pedal threads, the front rack and seat which I am keeping, and the chain and pedals. It has a biopace 28,38,48 on it from a generous member here. Specs say 25" for this 82' model. Seat tube is just a bit over 62cm, and top tube just under 58. It rides smaller than the specs show with the short top tube. Standover is 34". I would bet it is comfortable for 6'1" and taller.
I checked and lubed the headset and BB just to make sure all is good. Front wheel spins wonderfully but 40 spoke rear is due for grease as is the rear brake cable. The 28-38 shift is a bit lazy, so maybe a new chain is in order or perhaps some chainrings. You get the idea, bike is older with little use and may need dialed in to the user. Lots of good will here on this forum, so not trying to make much. How about $225 now? I don't wish to attempt shipping so sale to someone within perhaps 150 miles of Toledo Ohio. I can drive and meet halfway.

Love the Miyatas from this period! I bought and 1984 with the tax refund check from my first job as an RN. Nice bike and great price for it. I have a brother in Cincinnati, but it is too big for even him. Cheers!

Man, I'm glad that's not a 54 cm. Because it's a thousand miles away and pickup only. I would loose some sleep over that one. I mean, a thousand miles for a one-thousand. That makes sense -, doesn't it? What a great deal for a beautiful 1000!

It rides a bit smaller than it looks too as the top tube is 58cm. Long inseam and 6’1” is probably good.

If this was a 54 (and you'd ship it) I'd think about it, for about one second, then buy it. Heck, even if you wouldn't ship it, I'd buy it. As much as people have been asking for bikes lately, this is a real bargain, that someone should take advantage of. Maybe it's too cheap. Try raising the price.

Actually mostly low end stuff at this co-op with an occasional mid level. There is a like new Fuji S12S there for $225. It is also a larger size. I didn’t look carefully but I believe it’s a 60. That one even has Paselas on it if I remember. It was CLEAN.

I was planning on going down there on Friday, so I will get pics. The nicer vintage stuff is not of as much interest to the "need a bike" urban crowd. That is why I purchased the Miyata after seeing it set for 3 years. I couldn't watch it getting scratched and banged up. I was drooling over the condition of the Fuji when I saw it. No finders fee, but being a UPS worker, I have a great aversion to shipping something like a bike. Im not sure of Fuji sizing, but it looks like no less than 60 or no more than 62. I will measure it too. It was blue if that matters or is a clue at all.

1000 sold to a nice young man who came from Ann Arbor. He has a miyata 110 and a couple Surlys. He was quite excited and knew somewhat of the quality level. He was interested perhaps in some distance riding and the vintage workmanship. 6’3” and a perfect fit. I’m glad it went to someone who will maybe turn into a C&V guy. That was more rewarding than parting it out.

Before posting, I did take the stock front rack as my 1000 didn’t have one. I also took off the Avocet touring saddle as I have never tried one. As it was at sale time, it still retained the vintage touring bike vibe with the rear rack. He was very pleased.

Is the 1000 the sister bike to the Specialized Expedition?

Somehow missed this post. Scrolled through thinking I could do a half-way to Toledo trip and saw it finally sold. Normally 2cm too big for me but I once had a 62cm Expedition that worked great for my 6’1” self.

They are both similarly equipped full tourers and many say the expeditions were made by Miyata, somehow I don’t know if that’s been proven yet. But otherwise there’s no relation aside from them being considered two of the three best touring bikes of the 80s, the third being the Trek 720.
