70's Raleigh Super Course

Hi All, I've just purchased a 70's Super Course but have just found out that one of the previous owners etched their name and social security number onto the frames rear drop out. I suppose that reduces the value of the bike?
I also don't see a serial number under the BB shell, just the number 11.
It has a Huret Rd and a Shimano 600 Fd (FD-6200?) with 27" nisi-evan Super-Sport wheels.
I'll get pics soon.

the combination of a Freres Huret stern mech with the NISI - EVIAN rims makes me think it to be late 1960's rather than 1970's.

possible it could be a 1970 model but unlikely to be later...

is head emblem oval with two fasteners or a cutout heron with three fasteners?

Any damage (scratches in metal, bent tubes, dented tubes, modifications, or even attempting to etch one's name into the metal) to a frame/fork set reduces value, in my mind. Even something like this, which is factory issue but a stupid place to place a serial number...

Good job with the pictures.

Thank you for all of this new information!

We are definitely in the 1971-73 time here.

Some of the machine's fittings are not original.

These include rear mech, front mech, shift levers, chainset & gear block. Mudguards, rack, water bottle holder & pump holder are additions.

Fine looking machine well meriting an overhaul.

Hope you have lots of good enjoyment with it.

BTW - the OFMEGA chainset is the same one which was also sold badged as Avocet.

Thank you very much juvela!

Any idea on a value once cleaned up, with bottle holder, fenders, rack and pump holder removed, lube the axles and headset, clean up the chain rings and derailleurs.and replace tires and cables? There is certainly some light rusty spots, especially on top of the top tube, but the chrome is cleaning up nicely.

Looks like the same vintage as mine, a 1972. It may be that your rear derailleur is a Huret Duopar, which, amongst the non indexed wide range mechs, is just a joy to use. Check the cage with a magnet - it may be titanium.

I've got more questions on this bike, so I'll start a new post under C&V. I'm just curious, I see other similar SC going for 2-300 in good shape, but since most of mine is not original, what would the value be. $150 maybe?

It has a cool saddle, really nice color, and tasty upgrades. I'd peg it closer to $200 plus and put up a CL ad in the greater Boston area as well as locally. Someone who likes the bike will be willing to drive to pick it up.

I've seen those go for around $150 locally but Iowa is not exactly a hot market for vintage bikes.

By the way, the water bottle cage (a TA) and the saddle have a value. I'd sell the water bottle cage separately (maybe $20-25 on CL), The saddle is a little tougher because it adds real value to the bike. Maybe ask $230 for the bike as it sits without the cage. On the other hand, it's a PITA dealing with CL so maybe just sell the whole bike at $230. You'll likely get a better price in the spring than in January.

What's the TA, regarding the water bottle cage? It's a bit rusty, but should clean up nice.

Edit: ahhh, I see the TA's were the "Standard" back in the 70's!

I'd say $150-200, but it may be on the market a while, especially in winter. You may get more by stripping it and selling off the components.

Love that half-step + granny chainset. That could fetch $50 alone.

Thanks Hoopdriver. I plan on cleaning it up this winter and see what happens this Spring. I'd actually thought of putting a flat-bar or mustache bar on it. I'm not much of a road bar rider.
One of the PO's engraved some numbers on top of the current quill stem, so maybe swap out the stem and bars. Stem is frozen at the moment.

I just picked up a '71 (frame and fork only) for what I thought was a very fair price ($50). The paint was pretty far gone, so I sandblasted it and my son sprayed it with primer and paint. Based on that bit of background, if you're giving it a good tune-up and will be selling it in a hotter market (like Boston) in the spring, I can't see starting out asking for less than $200. Don't think I'd take less than $150 if I were there selling it.

nlerner is local to your market and is the "dad" of several of Super Courses, so perhaps he'll weigh in to lend his authority in this discussion.

Good info, thank you! I keep coming back to the PO that etched their name, and in one spot social security number, onto the frame and stem. What kind of obligation do I have to either try and remove it or at least make it unreadable? Parting it out may be my best option, and take what I can get for the “branded” frame.

I think you'd be under-water if you go through the refurbishment, it would be far better to just remove the rear rack and fenders, and leave the vintage bottle-holder and pump-holders. I'd give an easy $150 for it that way, without you even wiping off any dust, no replacing or lubing anything.

No obligation on your part. The PO wanted it there, it's on them, not you. It's part of the bike's history, identifies the original owner, who knows, they may be a who's-who in society. Please leave it.

Hi, I've noticed that there is a "C" on the seat post bolt and "Carlton" on the brake hoods. How does one identify a Carlton SC if the decals are missing? Would it change the value much?

Hi,

Nice acquisition with several upgrades! Based on kurtkaminer.com/TH_raleigh_serials.html, the serial number seems to confirm a 1972. The "Raleigh" marking style and the lugs call for a 1972 and before. I have a 1973 with a different marking style (first year for the change) and Capella lugs.
