We took ye ol' vintage Peugeot tandem out for an intended longish ride. Ended up with 62.85 miles, our longest ride this year or last.

Got in 3.5 hrs on the mountain bike with some significant climbing today. Trying to get some last minute fitness developed for the Palouse ride next weekend, but tomorrow might end up being a rest day.

There were a good 30-40 elk in this group

We are currently enjoying a stretch of beautiful weather. I took advantage Saturday morning and rode out to investigate rumors that the trail between Saint Paul and Hastings had been completed. This has been in the works for some time now, and the last section to be built was a 3-4 mile stretch through some industrial properties NW of Hastings. But I was told it had been paved by several people, although there was no "Grand Opening" scheduled yet.

And here it is:


Notice the convenient space between the stop sign and the concrete barrier. There were many outlaw tire tracks traversing that forbidden gap. I added mine to them. After riding through a lot of industrial wasteland with nothing but barbed-wire topped cyclone fences to look at, I came across this stunning view:





Then there were more half-hearted area denials to negotiate. Note the red arrow pointing out the work-around. It looks to me as if they are just trying to protect the little street entrance while the tarmac and concrete finish curing.



Further on we see some brand-new amenities waiting for the trail to open. There were several views just like this one.



But then I came to the true end of trail construction, which ended on what I think was Pine Bend Trail. The first part of which was paved, but then it turned to dirt as it went past CF Industries. Along this road I met a fellow with one of those GPS surveying staffs (or whatever you call them), and he told me he was there to help figure out the route the trail connector could take through or past the CFI land and numerous railroad crossings. It seems that there is a holdup on building the final connector in a dispute between the county and the railroad, and of course CFI themselves. I don't state this as fact, it is just what he told me, but here are the culprits:



As you can see, the wheeled pipeline runs through here, and those trains tend to be extremely long. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to have to stand there and wait while one of them went by. But I don't think this project has the budget required to build bridges over all the rail crossings. However, there were some other very nice bridges along this route, when you get to the currently open section:





All things considered, it was a very pleasant morning ride of about 60 miles. I got this shot of one of the ubiquitous barges on the way home:

I tried to get a job here last winter but for some inconceivable reason they didn't hire me.

Earlier this morning, I went on a beautiful 29½ mile ride in just under 2 hours. It was gorgeous outside, 72°F, and beautiful sunshine. Heck, EVERYBODY was outside today!

"Whew, what a bicycle ride!!! Beautiful day for it too. Lots and lots of people inside West Creek Pkwy off Patterson Ave. I rode from my house out to River Rd, and then out to Patterson, up Hockett Rd to Tuckahoe Creek Pkwy and the big Capital One complex. Then I did 2 laps inside West Creek Pkwy, trying to keep up with all the racers and their high tech Cervelo, Giant, Specialized, whatever... $5000 racing bikes. But all in all, I had a lot of fun. It was hilarious when I was done with my laps though, as the cops had Patterson Ave all barricaded with cones (Hope Church was going to be letting out). So, I stopped at Patterson, got off my bike, and the cops directed me across the street. I jogged beside my bike going across Patterson and went, "Ooooh...." as my legs were tired. One of the cops asked, "You're not cramping up, are you?" I said, "No, I'm okay... I was just trying to keep up those younger guys in there (points back towards West Creek Pkwy), and it's tough!". Then I turned my classic 1985 Fuji sideways so the two cops could see it, and I said, "Ain't it a classic? 1985... Still going strong too!". The younger cop looks at me laughs, "1985? Seriously? That's when I was BORN!" The other cop joins in and laughs and imitates that funny NFL football segment on TV and shakes his head and says, "C'mon, man!!" It was hilarious!! I got back on my bike, thanked the cops, who were still chuckling, and *very carefully* rode back home along Patterson Ave. 29½ miles in 1hr 56 min. Whew...."

Went for a family bike ride today and we rode close to where the 416 wildfire started a month ago. James and Victoria like to put the their feet in the Animas River near Baker’s bridge, which is located about 12 miles north of Durango, and is the location where Paul Newman and Robert Redford jumped off the cliff in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. While they play in the water, I ride up a fairly steep two mile climb that goes by a small lake, and terminates back to CO Hwy 550. At the top of the climb you can see the fire damage. The fire fighters were able to keep the fire from jumping over CO Hwy 550. There is about 500 foot or so green buffer between the fire damage and the highway. If one took a right at the stop sign and ride/drive another 8 miles of steady climbing you would arrive at Purgatory Ski Area. Silverton would be another 25 miles past the ski area over two 10,000’ plus passes. We timed the ride just about right, and got home before the afternoon thunder showers started.

I haven't been keeping up. Over the July 4th holiday we rode the rail trails on Cape Cod, and yesterday I circumnavigated the Bronx. Ride With GPS: OCRT, CCRT, Bronx

The longer ride on the Cape Cod Rail Trail was hot and humid, but we really enjoyed ourselves.

I got out for a last tune up ride with @gugie before next week's Tour de Palouse. It was a good ride up to Bald Peak State Park and a death defying descent (just barely defying death in my case thanks to a nasty speed wobble on the Montello) back to the usual Farmington Road return.

First ride on a new-to-me '86 Tommasini Racing was 37 miles of mostly flat and two-lane roads near Sequim, Washington. I stopped for lunch at Hardy's Market where I took this picture of my newest ride. I was so fired up to ride this bike I set a new PR on one of my favorite Strava segments.

On Thursday, we were at the country house. We put the tandem bike in the car. Yes, it fits, as it's a Honda Element, and the rear wheel was between the front seats of the car. We dropped off the car at the repair garage and took the long way home, 5.5 miles. The roads there are scenic and quiet. Then when the car was fixed, we rode single bikes back, taking the short way, 2.3 miles.





On Saturday, friends Pat and Harry came over and we did our usual short loop of 6.7 miles which includes a big hill. Pat and Harry use their bikes only about once a year, so I'm impressed they did fine on the hills.

The underground pump on the well at work went out today, so all of us workers were sent home at about 3pm after realizing that it was not going to be fixed in time to finish work!

I took advantage of the afternoon off to go out for a 43 mile ride past Visalia. I ended up at a rather special spot for me. Drive 168 wends between St. John's River and some lonely hills that rise from the valley floor at foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Four years ago after returning from a trip to Europe I was struck by wanderlust, and decided to start taking pleasure drives around the countryside. It was here that I stumbled upon a view of the valley I had never known, and realized that such gems must be hidden in many places. Since then I've become a determined explorer, naturalist, and historian of the San Joaquin.

This particular spot also inspired my first landscape painting about a year ago.

The Frejus is behaving admirably, and looks smart to boot. Cheers!

Heres the finished product. I picked up some chrome Ultegra toe clips from ebay, they fit perfectly. I had to fabricate one of the holding plates though as I only have one. They were size large too. They were about $15 shipped.

Superficial bramble scratches from my little crash. Hit a root-bump (shaded) at speed and basically launched into orbit - lucky those brambles broke (kinda) my fall!
