Possible to use road bike STI shifters with MTB rear derailleur?

Okay. Here's my thinking. I would like to get a cross bike to use as a multipurpose bike for winter, light touring, biking with the family, etc. What I would like to do is set it up with a rear cassette in the 11-32 range (10sp) with probably a compact (50/34) crank. That would enable me to do the occasional very long slow steady climb. I have a set of Shimano 105 5700 STI (10x2) shifters. Would these be compatible with say, a Shimano SLX mountain bike rear derailleur?

This is becoming a common setup. You can use any Shimano long cage (SGS) MTB rear derailleur EXCEPT the newer 10-speed Dina-Sys stuff. So, if the RD you have is from the "9-speed" era then it will work perfectly--it has the same cable pull ratio as modern road RDs so it'll go where your shifter tells it to for each gear.

Hmmm. The more I contemplate this the more my brain aches. It may be easier for me to get something like a Surly Cross-Check which has a stock Shimano Deore (M591SGS) Long cage rear derailleur and a stock Shimano 11-32T 9 spd cassette. Then switch out the stock bar end shifters for Shimano Tiagra 9 spd STI shifters. Doesn't sound like Shimano 105 10 spd shifters would work on that stock set up.

If your using a 10 speed 11-32 cassette, why can't you use a Shimano Road RD, the GS version of the 105 (5700) will cope with this fine (am running a similar set up to yours)

Well, basically I was looking at the "simplest" swap to set this up. The Surly Cross Check has a stock 9 speed 11-32 cassette with a stock Deore 9 speed RD. I would just have to get the Tiagra 9 speed shifters. That could be a bit expensive though. Other entry-level basic cross bikes I was looking at have short cage rear derailleurs with something like a 12-25 cassette. I would have to swap out the cassette and derailleur on that scenario for 10 speed components and then put on my 105 shifters. That could actually be cheaper but more complicated though. Like I said. . . .my brain aches.

Because the guide pulley will ride against the larger cogs. And if you manage to fix that problem with the B adjustment screw, the guide pulley will be further away from the smaller cogs.

You can use 9-speed STI shifters with a 9-speed mtn rear derailleur, 9-speed chain, and 9-speed cassette.
Or
You can use 10-speed STI shifters with a 9-speed mtn rear derailleur, 10-speed chain, and 10-speed cassette.
This is assuming all are Shimano.

Really? That would mean on the Surly just upgrading the cassette and chain to 10-speed. That may be the way to go!

Rear shifter, cassette, and chain (and to a lesser extent, the front derailleur) must match. The STI shifter is by far the most expensive part. Start with a bike which shifter is already the speed you want to be at.

But the previous statement reads that I could use the 9-speed rear derailleur, change to a 10-speed rear cassette and chain, and use my 105 STI 10-speed shifters. Is that true?

Yes. That will work.
You could also just change the cassette and chain and use the bar-end shifters in friction mode.

Do you own this cross bike already, or are you pondering buying it? Because I'm sure there's something like the Surly Cross Check that already has a 10 speed drive train with STIs. That would be the "simplest" way.

Hi yes I do. Its the only thead I could find that is within the scope of what I am looking for. Do you have any suggestions or ideas from my questions since I would want to know.

Generally speaking I know 9 speed and below are all interchangeable. With Im not so sure with lets say 10 speed STI such as the Tiagra 4700 STI to lets say fit with an Alivio RD.

Ive encountered a thead here where one guy used Microshift 2x10 shifters and he was able to use it with Alivio RD, so I was thinking lets say I use Tiagra 4700 (personally I like the internal cabling look, because it looks more sleek and less messy than with the external routing.)

Tiagra 4700 10-speed is not compatible with older 9 or 10-speed road or 9-speed MTB shifters. It is indeed 10-speed but uses the same cable pull as Shimano 11-speed shifters.
