Does your helmet alter the shape of your head?

Mine does. after 2 1/2 years of regular riding, I have noticed a big ridge and 2 valleys along the crown of my skull that correspond to the shape of my POC helmet. It is very comfortable to wear, but kinda creepy to run my fingers over my scalp and feel that. I don't suppose it is harmful? I'm glad I'm not bald.

I've noticed indentations in my skin after wearing goggles everywhere. When they were up on my forehead, the nose part dug into my scalp. The indentations have since faded. I don't doubt the helmet could cause this too, but I bet it's just your skin denting, like it does.

I've also seen similar things when wearing rings or a single type of sock every day for a while.

Unless you're wearing it impossibly tight I doubt it has any effect on your bone structure.

Now the fatty tissues, those could probably be temporarily reformed. As rhrgrt said though, I assume after not wearing it for a while it should go back to normal.

Had a serious crash back in the 90's. Helmet was a round one popular back the. My head became round and had ridges corresponding with air vents. I grew my hair long and combed like Donald Trump and accepted having a round head. Glad my helmet wasn't a wedge helmet!

Now I have heard everything. The big problem is that we will now hear forever this is another reason not to wear a helmet.

Not only that, but wearing a helmet will also affect your children's skull shapes.

I'm glad I am bald...no more helmet hair. But in all serousness, people's heads have all sorts of shapes, and wearing a foam bicycle helmet will not affect their shapes.

My nephew had a slightly asymmetrical skull, so they made him a custom helmet to wear at age 1 or 2 for several months to sculpt it back to "normal".

And, of course, some indigenous American cultures used to bind the heads of infants.

I knew there had to be a better explanation for the change in Klingons between the Original Star Trek, and Star Trek TNG.

Bicycle Helmets...

Now it all makes sense.

Most people are concerned with the outside part and how it looks. Since the helmet can form headshape, probably choosing the inside is more important.

With young children the bones aren't completely formed/fused.
With an adult, they are pretty fixed. It would take a lot to change the skull shape.

I would think a really tight helmet would be uncomfortable. Hopefully my helmet will stay put for the initial impact, after which a little movement may not be bad.

If your helmet is so tight it's altering the shape of your head, time to loosen the headband a bit.

I keep my chinstrap pretty tight so it will actually hold the helmet in place during a crash, but it is very comfortable. There does not seem to be much soft tissue to deform on my skull. The ridge down the middle and the two valleys remain for days between rides. I don't stay off the bike long enough to see if the shape normalizes with time. I should try a different helmet for a while.

I wear mine so tight I have scalp lumps poking out the vent holes. The tan lines make my head look like a soccer ball.

I'm sure not wearing a helmet could result in your skull being reshaped.

Not to laugh; the Maya in Central America, for generations bound the babies to head boards to flatten the skulls. Now babies are born that way! Go figure!

Is this like wearing a corset... for your head? What IS the most... desirable head shape?

I think I'm going to patent a new product. The head corset.

"Have you never liked the shape of your head? Do you want to shape your children's heads? Well have we got the product for you."
