Despite the hopeful sounding title of this Northeast Regional Discussion sub-forum thread, ”roll-on bikes on Amtrak Northeast Corridor?,” I think the usual rules still apply. You have to box the bike and take on a train with a baggage car. I’m planning to rent an SUV and drive with the bike(s) fully assembled.
I also have seen ads for a bike shipping service on Bike Forums, that got some favorable reviews as I recall, but I can’t remember the name.

RATS!
If the event were held the following week end, that would work out perfectly for me. Unfortunately, Oct. 9-11 is a nogo.

I'm going to try to communicate with the organizers about the ride schedules. I'm thinking that all the options might be available each day. If that is the case, I am leaning towards doing the 61 mile road ride on Friday. That is my birthday and 61 miles is perfect for my traditional 'age plus one' birthday ride. Might do the 45 mile mixed surface on Saturday and play it by ear for Sunday.
"...ride options will vary by day. Friday the 10-, 18- and 35-mile routes will be supported. All options will be open on Saturday. Sunday options will be 10-, 18-, 35-, 42- and 60-miles. Look for the complete schedule soon." (18 and 42 are mixed surface routes)

So, I'll most likely do the 18 mile mixed surface ride on Friday, the 60 mile road ride on Saturday and the 42 mile mixed surface ride Sunday. But I'm flexible to changing things around.

I like this idea of an October Fifty-Plus Annual Ride for motivation, because usually my training peters out in September.

It looks like I am out again this year. I really wanted to make this trip but there are personal issues which will interfere with traveling that weekend.
Have fun take pictures!

We've made our reservations for lodging, but not in the resort. We left making reservations at the resort until it was too late to book anything but camp sites at the resort. I don't camp so, we'll be at a Bed & Breakfast called the Solvang Inn. I am looking forward to seeing those of you who are still planning to come!

- [strike]schedule time off from work: one driving day, 3-4 (weekend days) for ride and hanging out, one return day[/strike]
- [strike]train with winter commuting, then intensify in mid March[/strike]
- [strike]ask Family permission to go away for week end (they probably would not want to go)[/strike]
- arrange accommodations
- pre-ride bike check at LBS
- rent car if necessary
- map driving route (~500 miles)
- pack
- Register for event [Even for professional conferences, I usually register on-site, in case of exigencies, but I plan to be in. The Pennsylvania Ride does offer a $10 discount before August 1.]
I’m not a camper, and even if a cottage or cabin, I like my WiFi and cable TV, especially on a vacation. My usual plan to find accommodations in a region is through the AAA Regional Guidebook. So a sub-task under “arrange accommodation” is “go to AAA office.”
BTW, training has been going along pretty well, but Labor Day was just yesterday.

Thanks for the reminder, @Miss K and congratulations. As noted above, I put these kinds of things off (to my detriment, or advantage… you never know).

Bicycle Times has posted links to all the routes. My plan is to ride the 18 mile mixed surface ride on Friday, the 60 mile road ride on Saturday my 60th Birthday ride) and the 42 mile mixed surface ride on Sunday.

My wife and I will be staying at Raystown Resort in a cottage for 4 nights, Thursday, 10/8 - Sunday 10/11. Hope to see some of my 50+ friends on the rides and at other times during the weekend. I'm starting to get excited about this vacation!

I'll call in for a car rental tomorrow, to pick up Wednesday.
As usual work has been busy, so I'm still undecided about the itinerary. Motels look pretty plentiful within an estimated 20 miles or so of the resort, though I think the roads look pretty rural, and (?) twisting, so I'm not looking forward to driving them at night. But I'm still undecided about arrival and departure. Ideally Thursday night, but certainly in time for a Friday ride, 1 PM. Probably a Sunday afternoon departure.
If anyone would like to trade cell phone numbers, send me a PM.
I posted upon leaving for the first of these Annual Rides I attended (as well as did the Kentons; the second Annual one, Watkins Glen, NY in 2010),
…After reading all the pre-departure postings, as I drove to Watkins Glen on that beautiful Friday morning I had the strong ideation of a group of disparate people who did not know each other, traveling separately en route to a mutual destination with a shared yet vague purpose in mind; not unlike the characters in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind....

The road bike is riding like new, and the mountain bike is in fine shape, not having ridden as a beater bike much this summer.

I am happy to hear Jim is coming! Although I'm not quite sure what to expect, I am really looking forward to this trip. I think there is going to be a lot going on at this event, so it should be a really good time!

Not knowing what to expect has not been a problem for me so far and I don't expect it to be now. Looking forward to the adventure!

You have fun out there. I would be coming and have the weekend free, but traveling this Friday and Monday is out for me, so I will have to stay local.

After two very long days in the car, we are at Raystown Lake in a cottage very close to the event area. It is incredibly beautiful here. I had just enough time before dark for a short ride after checking in. I hope I brought my climbing legs! From what I saw today, I'll be needing them.

Glad I rode early today! Raining hard here now. Not sure how soon it will stop, but the next two days look great. The scenery today was beautiful, but it was the hills that really took my breath away.

We will need pictures and detailed ride reports! It might force me to go next year!
