Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And, I was looking for an excuse to get a CF bike, as I got my first aluminum last year, after riding steel for 50+ years.

Oh, I did find a Raleigh Carbon Clubman, slightly used floor and test model . The fenders come off first. then got to do something about those classic looking tires. The price was right, although I'm not too crazy about the sky blue color. I think it looks a little "girly" but for the price , I couldn't turn it down. KB

I'd kill myself, but then I wouldn't be able to post about it on BF.

Is your masculinity so fragile that you are threatened by colors?

So rather than take the man at his word that he took a bad line while pushing the envelope in the biggest race in the world, you'd like to believe that a World Champ made a rookie mistake that you, with the benefit of all of your track time, world have avoided by keeping a cooler head. Good to know.

In other words, I was delighted the expensive rented bike appeared to be completely undamaged.

You guys are being absurd and oversimplifying horribly. Target fixation is indeed a known phenomenon. But it is not an if and only if proposition. Looking at an object doesn’t usually mean you are going to hit it. And hitting an object isn’t only because you were looking at it. Lots of other ways to analyze this as evidenced by many of the other posts.

Somehow I think if I were headed for a wall I just might be looking at it too. There is no indication of looking causing the crash, but rather the other way around. If YOU were going to crash into a wall, what exactly would YOU be looking at?

By the way, what is a sport bike? I thought it was a couple of levels below a race bike.

Some people are critical thinkers and others believe what they're told without question. I have my opinion and you have yours. The only difference is I'm not going to stick my nose in the air call you absurd. Because the subject isn't very important.

What's always been the oddest thing to me is how dramatic and smart ass people get towards total strangers on the internet about something as dumb as a bike crash. It's like they take it personal. It's kind of creepy.

If the bike isn't crashed or otherwise impacted, causing damage that can eventually lead to a systemic failure at any moment.

Carbon bikes are safe. If you baby them and you have favorable odds.
You could easily levy all of those criticisims toward any frame material (Steel, Titanium, Carbon, Aluminum, Magnesium, etc). Well, all except the corrosion one for Carbon and Titanium. Carbon does not corrode (or oxidize) as far as I know. Titanium does oxidize like most metals but it would probably take a few lifetimes for it to be a factor.

Sure, newer Aluminum frames are designed better than the old ones. But I think you can get good deals on carbon as well. I think its best to be material agnostic and let the deals present themselves whatever the frame/fork is made of. Just try to get it from a reputable manufacturer or small frame builder.
